A backwards bike = major brain fuckage.

Engineer Destin Sandlin runs a video channel called !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . This video of his (found on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) shows just what can happen when you challenge your brain. When he tries to ride a bicycle that’s been altered to steer backwards... chaos ensues. Eight months later, he’s taught himself to ride the “backwards bike” (a task his kid learns in a couple of weeks); but then how do you ride a regular bike?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I’m not sure he’s correct in calling this a “cognitive bias” — to me the act of riding a bike is more a set of actions and skills that become unconscious and integrated with systems that are beyond our cognitive control, and the addition of the reverse steering requires our brain to reprogram a highly internalized SET of skills, not just the steering — but it’s pretty interesting.

It’d be a lot easier to control the reverse steering bike if it wasn’t for the very quick rack, if the steering angle changed slower it’d be easier to control

You might be right.

Great stuff. Knowledge =/= understanding - applies to driving a manual transmission as well!

Wouldn’t you expect a 1:1 ratio?

yeah 1:1 would normally be favorable however in this situation I think it’d have to be perhaps 1:0.75 or less

That’s nothin, Richard Klein’s Rear Steer Bike I is so hard to ride, only one person has ever done it. He was one of my professors in college, and he figured out how to ride it using physics.

Not only does it steer in reverse, the steering is at the rear. Also, the bike becomes unstable above about 2 mph, and you cannot lean it because of the position the steering is in. It’s insane.

this is awesome. so interesting on different levels especially where he just seemingly instantly clicked and was able to ride the normal bike. And I also never thought about how complicated it is to learn to ride a bike all the balance and forces that have to be balanced with each other.

Trust me, he’s making it look easier than it really is. He won $5000 and uuber physics cred for doing it!

That’s freakin’ weird.
