Could you ride this bike?

I would like to think that I could figure out how to ride this bike pretty quickly, but I suspect it is way more difficult than it seems like it should be. There is a really simple modification, the handlebars are geared to the fork so that the wheel turns in the opposite direction of a normal bike.

I feel like I could, as it is fairly easy to ride a bike without turning the handlebars much at all, you just lean the bike.

Handles are for sissies anyway. I could use that teapot no problem.

I’ve actually ridden a bike like this. It was at a county fair (Marshfield Fair for the locals here) It is incredibly hard. I’m a pretty experienced biker and I couldn’t get more than a few feet.

I think you’d be surprised at how much turning the handlebars is used for balance, especially at low speed. Add in the fact that you have to turn them the wrong way and you will end up over correcting and then over correcting your original over correction and oh no I’ve gone crosseyed. Basically this bike takes your normal feedback loop and completely screws it up.

Now put the pedal gearing from this bike on that bike.

(hint: It would probably kill you if you combined them.)

I suspect the more you have biked the harder it would be to learn to ride this. Muscle memory is a difficult thing to learn and once you’ve learned it, it can be just about impossible to overcome.

when you run into trouble your instincts are going to make you wreck, this will not end well.

yea thats it. no matter how hard you thought about it when you lean right you turn into the lean which sent you to the ground

I’m sorry, I got really distracted around 0:50 or so. What was that video about again anyway?

Yeah, that wouldn’t be good. Reverse steering on a motorcycle wouldn’t end well. Though you would at least fall over long before you got going fast enough to do any real damage.

pedal backwards, move forward.

ehh, I kind of went through the same thing with cornering on an MTB(and apparently it is a thing for all 2 wheeled things). If you want to carry speed through a corner on an mtb you actually have to turn the opposite way (called counter steer) it takes a bit to make yourself do it, but its not that hard. Granted, counter steer is only for a moment, and only in corners, but somewhat a similar idea.

Looks like it works normally if you pedal normal though. Is it just geared so that you instantly get a lower gear when you pedal backwards? My Italian is pretty much nonexistent once you get past scuzie and grazie so I have no idea what they were talking about.

Looks like it. I’ve seen freak bikes geared that way before, so it’s not that hard to do. I would like to see that guy combine the two and see how well he can do it.

Yes, but on this you would be counter-counter-steering.

you would just have to remember to “push” into corners instead of pulling. its easier to think of that way, instead of trying to reverse directions in your head. You push with your inside hand instead of pulling.

Like the people that play with the inverted axis, but you do get used to it as long as you don’t think about it.
