!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

With Global Time Attack Road Atlanta a little over a week away I thought this would be a great time to reflect on all the records broken at the last Global Time Attack event.

On November 14,2014 Global Time Attack (GTA) and Super Lap Battle (SLB) converged once again. To find the fastest time attack cars the USA has to offer. As usual Buttonwillow Raceway Park in Buttonwillow, California would play host to the event.

For those of you that are not familiar with this event, it is the biggest event for time attack in the USA and North America for that matter. Super Lap Battle is the USA’s version of Hyper Rev Super Battle in Japan. And this year was no exception the field boasted a record setting 60+ cars from all over the USA and North America. One of many records to be broken this year. The Track layout used, as always is Race #13 which is a 3.1 mile 12 turn clockwise circuit. Anyone putting down a sub 1:50.000 minute lap or faster is really moving here.

As the day dawned on the event we awoke to a somewhat ugly cloudy day in southern California. And it didn’t take long for the records to start falling, in every class. We’ll start in the Enthusiast class and move up the field to the big dogs in Unlimited.

In Enthusiast RWD we see our first new record set by Amir Bentatou in the Marvelous

Tune/StanceWorks E36 BMW with a time of 1:58.235.

Next we move up to Street FWD where we saw the “Legend” him self Ken Suen setting a new class record with a 1:55.602 in the Godspeed Project “Big Red” Honda Civic.

Street RWD had one of the biggest fields of the day. However it was Rif Dagher in a brand new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray tuned by Platte Forme AG that would take the top spot with a record setting 1:51.089.

Street AWD saw the return of Mark Jager and the Yimi sport Tuning Subaru Impreza STI who took home the top spot in the class with another record time of 1:50.206 even with a small fire.

Limited FWD brought Canadian Time Attack driver, William Au-Yeung back to the states. He laid down a record setting time of 1:51.789 in the PZTuning.ca Acura RSX.

Limited RWD was another large group, which saw another American powered car snagging a record braking time. The 2013 Corvette Z06 piloted by Cody Kishel put down a record braking time of 1:44.456.

Limited AWD gave us a small taste of what was to come in unlimited. Jeff Westphal set a class record with a 1:44.062 in the Professional Awesome/Fortune Auto Mitsubishi Evo 8 this would also be the fastest lap in Limited overall.

Kinja'd!!!

Unlimited FWD had no record breakers, however Formula Drift Driver Daijiro Yoshihara would come awfully close to the record set by Chris Rado in the “F-Wing” Scion TC. Dai managed a 1:48.016 in Spoon Sports/Go Tuning Unlimited FD2 Civic with a broken splitter. Dai was only 1.28 seconds off the record.

The stage had been set for the fastest class of the day Unlimited AWD. Third place would see the Snail Performance WRX driven by Taylor Wilson and tuned by the “Sauce Bauce” him self Travis Barnes put down a lap of 1:51.944. The Lyfe Motorsports GT-R co-driven by Cole Powelson and Kyle Schick put down a blistering time of 1:40.967 which would have been enough had it not been for what was to come. In the final session of the day after a one-year hiatus of test muleing and “hard parking”, we saw the return of the infamous GST Motorsports Subaru “GST L”, and its driver the “David Beckham of Time Attack” him self Jeff “G-Stig” Westphal. Along with him came the owner and tuner of the “GST L” Mike Warfield. Jeff put down an insane lap time of 1:38.967, which was not only a new class record but also the fastest unlimited time and fastest overall time of the day. The lap broke the GTA/SLB unlimited record set back in 2012 by FXMD and Billy Johnson in their NSX by 1.412-seconds.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

So now that the dust has settled and the champagne has been sprayed. This was definitely a GTA/SLB for the ages; with 9 new records set, one of which was a new fastest over all time. How long will theses new records stand, or will we see them fall by the way in 2015, only time will tell.

I think you mean “breaking.”
