More than double the national average. Contributing factors are no-fault insurance, unlimited lifetime personal injury coverage, and and a high rate of successful personal injury lawsuits. Thanks a lot Joumana Kayrouz (anybody in SE Michigan should recognize her). You’re not off the hook either Sam Bernstein.

Reasons #1-29052 are the same: Winter. #29053: the roads are a travesty of potholes.

The others have to do with my job and the conservative politics of West Michigan (but I won’t get into those). But the beer is great!!!

Thankfully I don’t know her. The Bernstien clan however, will be embedded in my mind for a while. Came back to MI for a quasi-vacation and remarked, “Why isn’t Bernstein’s kid looking at the damn camera for the commercial? Is he fucking blind?”
Yes, he’s blind you idiot.
Also, fuck No-Fault insurance.

With every other aspect of cost of living here being so cheap, I’m personally ok with it since I’m used to NY and LA cost of living. Obviously I have the means to afford insuring 3 vehicles which is not the case for everyone, and it’s a serious barrier to entry for legal car ownership in this state. Kind of a chicken/egg thing, we have high insurance rates because of uninsured drivers, and drivers remain uninsured because of high insurance rates. Our reliance on cars over public transit doesn’t help either.
Though, as someone else here brought up, it would make much more sense to pay the MCCA once per driver as opposed to once per vehicle , especially for those of us in multi-vehicle per person households. I haven’t looked into the feasibility of such a proposal, but it sounds like exactly the type of thing that could be achieved with Michigan’s weird ass petition system.

And I bet the creators of this unintended consequence, just like every other, yapped about what great consumer advocates they were being, how everyone deserves infinite coverage, how victims of fender benders need the protection of being able to sue everyone for everything, and how any possible cap on jury awards is an attack on the children of single mothers...

Fuck no-fault. I’m not sure how the hell that ever got put into motion. Oh, you hit me? And its 100% your fault? No big, let me insurance cover my repairs, not yours. Yea, ok.

I would agree that in the grand scheme of things it’s not too bad. Having looked over what it costs to insure my car, it doesn’t seem like an undue burden, and I honestly didn’t even have enough knowledge to know that it was a comparatively high rate until I heard this story on the radio. It does seem kind of ridiculous that the MCCA is per vehicle though. Once I get my bike, between me and my parents we will be paying that fee at least seven times, maybe ten (I don’t know if it applies to boats as well), although when stated like that it does seem to be a pretty absurd first world problem : P
There are also a number of other factors like you said—uninsured drivers, low reliance on public transit, crime (depending on the location). I know I’ve heard before that Detroit is pretty much the most expensive place in the country to insure a car, and given the other things I’ve heard I could definitely see that being true.

Love TC, great place to visit year round. My girlfriend’s family has a cabin up there, and there are also some phenomenal driving roads. Here’s a gif of her last hedgehog playing on the beach at the bay:

True story: when I moved to Michigan (from Ohio) and got quotes from Allstate (who was my insurance in Ohio) they wanted to change my rate from $140 per month to $513 per month.... I laughed at them and went elsewhere.

I am originally from South Carolina. Winters here are hell. My wife has a 2006 Jeep Liberty which we use when we go up north in the winter. As much as people rip on the Liberty for not being a “real” Jeep, the 4x4 system is great in the snow. Never had a problem, even when wading through 2+ feet during the wicked 2013-2014 winter.
