I’m trying to track down a ticking sound coming from my Subaru’s engine, and someone suggested I check to see if the timing belt tensioner was blown. I pulled everything apart this morning and took a video of what it looks like at idle.
Other videos I’ve seen use the newer style of tensioner with the hydraulic unit integrated into the pulley housing, and they do move a lot more, but I don’t know if it’s because of the style change or if the tensioner on my car is fine.
Someone else’s video, with the new style tensioner:
Let me know what you think, Oppo.

It sounds like it’s starting to go bad.

Have you tried wedging something against the piston to stop it from moving and see if that stops the sound?

While it's running, try seeing if you can stop the belt with your hands. Report back and we can go from there
