So I was browsing autotrader for a little bit and I found a gem, a 2003 BMW 525i Wagon which is only a diesel engine and poop paintjob from being the ultimate jalop vehicle. It’s pretty cheap, has an okay amount of mileage and is near me, I want it so bad.... What do you guys think?

The most accurate statement I’ve ever hear about cheap used BMWs is that “there is no such thing as a cheap used BMW.” Anything with a BMW badge on it that costs less than 5-7K and has not been meticulously maintained probably needs 1-2K of maintainence immediately and you can expect other things to break regularly. The more you spend upfront, the less you’ll spend later. It’s cheaper to save for longer and buy a nice one. I would not touch an E39 in the first place, but if I was so inclined I’d look for a 540 or 530 with a stick for 7-8k and I wouldn’t buy anything without a folder of service records. If you are interested in picking up a secondhand bimmer I’d say go check out BMW form classifieds. The owners generally love their cars, know their stuff, and understand what their ride is really worth. Just my $0.02

I’m sorry, is this a manual e39 wagon?

Looks like the perfect candidate for an LS swap. Fairly easy on the E39, compared to the E46 or E36. Well documented, too.

Then you MUST get it! I’ve a manual 530i sedan, but the wagon would be dope

i have a 540i wagon w/ 150k miles on it. the two future plans are super charger (450 rwhp is easily achievable) and manual swap. just have to sneak it by the wife

Nice! I need to replace the coils/plugs on mine as I lost spark/had a misfire on one cylinder 2 days ago... Would like to get more power out of the 3.0 6, but also like the mileage I’m getting. Have you seen the Alpina 540i wagon that some guy has in SoCal? So pretty.
