I remember when SDPD motocops switched from the old K-1000 to the BMW cop rockets. I was talking to one of the guys about how he liked the new bike. He said the ABS was absolutely amazing and that it felt “completely unnatural to be able to brake in turns on gravel” etc. He was super impressed.

Neither of them fell off. I call it a tie.

I’d wager that you could crash just as easily on dry pavement by jamming on the front brakes like an idjit the way they did.

I’ve never been pleased that they made that switch. I’m not sure why though.

They sure were. Every single one of them, I’ll bet. That said, I’d love a decommissioned Police K-1000 ...

Same here. I think it’s just the price of those bikes that get to me.

How weird would it be to be on that bike with the training wheels? All of your instincts would be screaming “You gunna die!”

Those little rigger-stability-things could have other applications.

Forget the ABS, I want a bike with the stabilizer bars. Imagine the fun you could have in winter.

It would be a great option if they could be deployed kind of like airbags, only you could reset them yourself.

Conventional ABS doesn’t take into account lean angle of the machine during brake use. So with an older ABS equipped machine, if the bike is leant over and the brakes are applied, I assure you, you will still crash. There’s new bosch systems out now (Ducati 1299, KTM 1290, R1) take not only wheel speed, but also lean angle and pitch into their algorithms. This means the brakes can truly be grabbed with your full force while leant over in the rain and the brakes will only allow enough friction to be applied not to lock the front wheel.
Keep in mind this means the machine will slowly stand upright and allow more braking force to be used, but still a hell of a lot better than having to be upright when applying them to begin with really.

Judging by the footage of the front wheel, looks like you could still be in some danger if the ABS has to kick in. I saw the front wheel briefly lock up a couple of times during the ABS stop. I imagine in the wrong situation you could still have a spill, especially if you were turning. That being said, this looks amazing and should help save injuries/lives.
