So, this dealer here in Nashville has purportedly conducted a full rebuild of this Disco 2. Thoughts?

It’s totally possible that somebody built a reliable un-buggy Disco II. Totes.

$26000? CP, maybe take $10k off the top and we can start talking. I mean it doesn’t even have the locking transfer case.

26k would be better spent on a defender, or a series rig brought up to modern times with disc brakes and whatnot

$26k? $5k I can have an unreliable one and still not spend the remaining $21,000 on repairs. CP all day.

Not bad if you really want a disco. It’s expensive for the miles but many times cheaper than new. They nailed it:is not for everyone but I think they’ll find a buyer

I have to tell customers all the time that the $ you spent making sure the car runs right does not add value to it.
besides the fact that the picture of the engine block looks like they put the sleeves in with a hammer and the coolant line upgrade looks like something a 6th grader put together.

This is a cash purchase truck only, they will likely not find a buyer, due to the fact that the person who wants something like this needs some form of coop financing (loan). Disco II’s only book for 2-4k. The only way this sells is if the buyer walks in with a cashiers check for it. And why would you do that when it is 26k and you could by a properly sorted D90 with that much?>

Like is said, someone out there is going to have a hard on for disco’s and no patience for working on it (not good bed fellows, I know) and walk right up in there with cash money. may take a while, but it will sell.

Holy way too much money for that. I thought the sleeve dropping was solved by 03 anyways? Totally way too much money. Maybe 10 grand all in for something like this? Plus it says nothing about how many miles on the chassis, or any wiring upgrades there. Is the sunroof going to still die on me? Probably. Windows, probably. And “Seat heaters work better than most” doesn’t instill much confidence in me either

Teach me your ways of recognizing shoddy mechanical work o earthroamer!
Oh, how I long to be an extremely practically capable man.
Dude, seriously though, not taking shop class + not having brothers + military minded dad (decided being a provider was more important than being a mentor, not mad just bummed my dad didn’t teach me more stuff about working on cars) = less than practical adult male.
PS: Love my pops, just wish that the economy wasn;t a soul-devouring beast that requires the sacrifice of all spare time in order to make a living in this day and age.

Wonder if they would do that for real.....

I'll go against everyone else here, and say I would love to have it in my driveway. There are a ton of these for sale all over, and this one appears to be in as good of shape as it can be, and has tasteful quality modifications. I love this truck.
However, the price is absurd. The owner seems to have forgotten that you don't get back what you put in. If the vehicle was under $20k, maybe. $15k yes.
A quick search of autotrader reveals there are 97 2003 models for sale in the US, with a top price of $16,500. The most expensive vehicle only has 45,000 miles, and still will wind up selling for a few thousand less than the asking.
Assuming the engine rebuild and other work was done as well as they're bragging, I would feel comfortable paying between $15-20k for this.

I would love to see where you can get a D90 in the US for that. You can get a Series for under $30k, but not a Defender.

yeah I mean this guy built this truck as a promo deal and put miles on it. Right buyer would still scoff at the price. Maybe the chassis had 130K on it too which is either a blessing (sometimes) or a curse (usually). I would think if he built it from a 20K mile example he would have disclosed it.
Mmmmm ICON D2 sounds nice. But for real that is up near defender territory, and is certainly into old G wagen territory (diesels you couldnt kill out of the box)

So, funny tangential but related story. There is a canyon outside of Sedona Arizona called oak creek canyon that is really pretty great and because its a wilderness area you are free to explore it at your pleasure (being in the public trust)...except that the road that runs though it belongs to the town. So, being the greedy bastards that some people are, the town made people buy a pass to be able to park anywhere off the road in order to enjoy the wilderness area. It was called the “red rock pass” and it was like $30 for 5 days or something ridiculous. Well the local community rallied and formed a defense that the fees constituted a abridgment of their religious freedoms since Sedona is (in theory) some type of spiritual vortex and that the wilderness area is a spiritual place. Long story short: they won. They still sell the pass and enforce it but all you have to do to get out of it is to go to the courthouse and explain that you were there religiously and its waved. Good times.

I know, I know. I've had a soft spot for discos and defenders ever since I was a kid. Here are the factors that make me like it. 1.) its clean, 2) it appears to have been rebuilt with skill and quality parts, and 3) They have tasteful, useful mods on it.
I'm not saying I would pay $20k, but if someone offered it to me for $16-18k, I would think seriously about it.

i might be interested in it for that much if the installed lockers and the proper t-case too. They left a lot of stuff out in order to leave room for a serious killing on profit.

I didn't see what the trim package was. If it was an HSE it might have a rear locker, which would be good enough for me. As for the T-Case, apparently they have the ability to be locked, but for whatever reason, LR left out the linkage. Its a pretty simple fix apparently. They don't mention doing it, but if you're going through all the other work, I don't know why you wouldn't do that as well.
You're right that they're trying to make a killing on it though.

Not on 03’s, you have to put in an 04 or 2000-2001 transfer case. the 03 does not have a central locking mechanism inside the t-case.
http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/129-071…
Weak Link:
Center Differential
Models Affected:
‘99-’03 Discovery II
What Happens:
The Discovery II has a center differential in the transfer case similar to an axle differential. The center diff transfers power to the front and rear axles for full-time four-wheel drive. Unfortunately, the differential does not come with provisions from the factory to be locked for a 50/50 torque split when off-pavement. The ‘99-’01 1/2 D IIs have the internal provisions to lock the transfer case, but no method to engage. The ‘01 1/2-’03 D IIs must have the entire transfer case swapped out in order to have a locked low-range.
Sturdy Fix:
In its final year of production, the D II came from the factory with a center diff-lock shifter to lock the center differential. The cable-actuated ‘04 CDL shifter is available from Expedition Exchange and can be retrofitted to ‘01 1/2-’03 D IIs. The CDL Kit is composed of all Land Rover parts and contains everything one needs to lock one’s CDL-ready transfer box, including the shifter knob, ‘04 CDL shifter body, cables, and fasteners. The ‘99-’01 1/2 D IIs only need to be retrofitted with the necessary parts from a DI.

Interesting. I thought the 2002-2003s also just needed the linkage. That may be part of the reason they're so cheap. Even the off roaders don't want them.
