Staggered low-profile tires, mexipoke, and the paint is peeling off EVERYWHERE.

What, praytell, is “mexipoke?”

I am guessing those aren’t daytons.

“Mexipoke” is a term used to describe the ungainly protrusion of the wheels far from the wells; generally seen on what are usually considered to be less-than-tastefully-modified examples of the Lowrider culture.

I want to start a new series “When you’re a family man but you’re still a lame” with minivans stanced wheels or a Honda Odyssey with Vossen wheels which I see like every day.

I can’t recall the last time I saw actual Daytons

I want to believe that this guy is just trolling the world and knows that on his FWD van, these won’t help his speedy ambitions, even a little.

Inb4 everyone tries to explain how that’s not at all racist

Call it what you want, call me what you will by proxy, I was just explaining the word as you requested

No worries, not calling you anything. Just skipping to the likely outcome to save everyone some time.

Ah ok.
I appreciate that bit. I’d hate to have to defend myself over providing a definition to a term :)

The wheels poke out past the fenders. You don’t see it very often, mostly became a thing in Southern California in the late 90’s. Most often on small cars and small pickups, with tiny, spoked wheels. The “mexi-” part comes from the fact that nearly every time you saw this, there was a hispanic person driving, and we know all brown-skinned people are Mexicans.
![]() 04/22/2015 at 15:42 |

I see it every day in my driveway, now that you mention it:

I’m mexican. People get offended on my behalf so much, there isn’t enough offended parts of me left to e offended by things anymore. Besides, all Mexicans are anointed at birth with a destiny to fulfill one of the stereotypes at minimum. Our family? Yes, we really do have like 6 pinatas at family reunions. Yes, we get drunk and swing golf clubs at them. And yes, we start early in the day so we can then have a mid afternoon nap and then wake up and party some more (once grandpa wakes up and has another margarita).
But FWIW this style of car is like “west coast mexican” mexi-poke. Detroit area mexicantown mexipoke is “Pokin your head ‘round the corner to keep watch while your buddy finishes jacking the honda parked on the street” #DetroitProblems

Honestly I love me a stanced van. As long as there isn’t excessive camber they look sort of wagon-ish

Oh hai! Fellow Latina here. Mexican-American, as well. Just because you're ok with bigotry aimed at us doesn't mean it's ok. Casual racism is still racism.

Nah I mean full blown minivan. I'll take some pictures, excessive camber and all that.

Mmmmmmm no, I don’t think this is a form of racism. But there are two very clear reasons for that and why this isn’t even a gray area for me.
1) There is no mention of the driver. We know there must be a driver because 90s caravans are not used as driverless vehicle test beds. Other than that, nothing. And mexi-poke does NOT imply the driver’s own race must be hispanic, but it does imply that the style this car is invoking is that of the lowrider scene that was pioneered by the west coast hispanic population. Which brings me to .....
2) Mexi-poke isn’t a derogatory term. Not in the midwest anyways. It describes style. Ergo a well done 70s impala like a lowrider could be described as “mexi-poke” and be a good thing. In this case, the car’s modifications don’t suit the vehicle and it appears to be in a poor state of maintenance which could imply even shoddier work on the upgrades. So it is used as a derogatory towards the car/owner as it relates to their taste and/or ability strictly in the automotive tense.
But I understand why we should be careful tying in ethnicity to adjectives. I’m sure you can find reviews of products in magazines to this day that still use “chinese” as a byword for “poor quality”. And if it is used as a way to deride hispanics in other areas then it is what it is and people are still jackasses. Frankly I think it’s just too obscure and underused and specific of a term to be racist even if it is supposed to be.
And now for some lowriders because I just remembered how much I love old 60s impalas.

Do you just enjoy being outraged? Like why bother calling him out for how he feels about his own people. Who are you for telling the man how to think?
![]() 04/22/2015 at 19:34 |

Bitch please. Erryone knows 6-4s are the best impalas.
![]() 04/22/2015 at 19:37 |

No need for this, please. The original thoughts of “this could be racist” was a bit of a joke. Havoc wasn’t wrong to point out that even if slight, it is wrong to use words in a way to deride other races. I countered why this is not the case, and we’re done. Let’s not have this blow up a fine post about lowriders.

No, instead, let’s blow it up INTO a post about low riders.
Bring the muthafuckin’ ruckus

Mmmmmmmm we appear to be at an impass......LETS GO TO THE HOTWHEELS
Hmmmmmm this does not make it any easier. But for sentimental reasons (my 65 impala lowrider hotwheels has been a long favorite of mine) I’m sticking with the 65.

![]() 04/22/2015 at 19:45 |

Let me explain my reasoning: from ‘61 to ‘64, Chevy built an impala that looked way better than Cadillac. There is no ‘61-’64 Cadillac I’d take over a same era Impala. That’s quite a fuckin’ feat. Ergo, the 64 impala is better.
![]() 04/22/2015 at 19:46 |
|
While not a true low rider, that boat tail is fucking badass.
![]() 04/22/2015 at 19:47 |
|
I hate the lack of sidewall. 2-3” less rim and it would be perfect.
![]() 04/22/2015 at 19:52 |
|
But the slabsided 64 is so plain and boring compared to the sensual curves of the 65. They’re subtle, but there. It also has better proportions for a lowrider imo. Those pillars make it look lower than it is and when you drop it hard? It IS stance. Stancenation today is a bunch of dreamers with hondas chasing after the 65 impala.

Idk, big wheels DO have a place in car culture. Take the above donk (and it is a true donk). Specs below:
Performance: 905 hp 632ci BBC; 4I80e transmission; FAST XFI 1,000 hp tall deck fuel injection system; 9-inch Ford rear end; 4.10 gears; JE pistons; Brodix 430 cfm heads; mild solid roller cam; March Performance serpentine setup
Exterior: Lexus Mercury Metallic; red pinstripe molding
Interior: Black “basketball print” suede with red double stitching; custom Classic Instruments gauges; brushed-aluminum dash kit; chrome convertible rack; custom black top, power windows and locks; 15-inch Billet Specialties steering wheel
ICE: JVC head unit; “top secret” Kicker system
Wheels/Tires: 26-inch Forgiato Itos; 26×9 on 275/25/26 Pirelli tires (front); 26×10.5 on 295/25/26 Pirelli tires (rear)

No low rider is more iconic than the ‘64 impala.
![]() 04/22/2015 at 19:57 |

Oh big rims work great on some styles, just not on a boattail like that. Not those rims anyways. But a similar style wheel that’s a bit smaller with a bit more sidewall could make it look like a killer restomod/lowrider. But also keep in mind you are taling to someone who wants to take an early 90s fleetwood, slap on a supercharger and some bolt ons, throw on a heavy duty airbag system, and make it into a drift car. I call it “Driftwood”. Oh I also want some real honest to goodness wood trim inside my drift car. Classiest fucking drift car ever.
![]() 04/22/2015 at 20:01 |

And if it is possible for a lowrider to be “generic” it’s a 64 impala. THey make good lowriders, but they were overplayed. I would never turn one down (assuming the hydros are in good shape) but if it was my money I’d probably do a mini truck or an el camino before the 64. A riviera or a 65 would be my first choices for sure.
![]() 04/22/2015 at 20:11 |

Riviera is tight, El Caminos I can get behind when they have non SS Monte Carlo front clips.
![]() 04/22/2015 at 20:17 |
|
Ulch. The worst part of the MonteCamino is the company that did them is called “choo choocustoms”.......Why would you name your car customization company that?!?!?!?
And I take back what I said, first and foremost Iwould hunt down one of the Seville pace cars used at LeMans in 2000/2001. I don’t know of many other teams who had the balls to not only show up for the first time at LeMans but do so in the top category AND find the time to modify and send over your own luxury touring sedan to provide safety and pace cars for the race.....That is an unfathomable amount of swagger from a new team.

1) el camino- I have literally been saying exactly that for years. I hate the SS aeronose, and I hate the stupid fucking choo choo name. I meant more along these lines-
2) Cadillac- pimp shit like that is why I love that company as much as my family (sometimes more)

Good then!
What part of Michigan? You’ve taken your new 1LE to any autocrosses or track events yet?
I’ll be in Toledo on Sunday for the NorthWest Ohio Region’s first event. Come out there. Lots of good people in the NWOR SCCA region. I’m slapping new tires on my car tomorrow for that
