I took my 2012 Mazda5 6MT into the dealer yesterday to diagnose a clunking noise when starting and shifting. I’m 35,175 miles into a 36,000 mile warranty, so wanted to make sure this was fixed before I had to rely on the powertrain warranty.

As it turns out, they’re replacing both transmission mounts as well as the engine mount. One of the three was completely shot, whilst the other two were in questionable condition. What I want to know is what on earth caused these parts to fail so early? I’ve broken mounts before, but that was in high-performance cars that were pushed to their limits; this is a sedately driven minivan!

Unfortunately they couldn’t find one of the parts anywhere in the US, so it’s being overnighted from Canada. You would think that the parts would be nearly identical to those used on the 3, but I guess that isn’t the case. I can’t complain too much, as this is the only problem I’ve had with the car in the 2.5 years I’ve owned it.

Is this a common Mazda problem, and something I should expect to replace every few years?

I grenaded a motor mount in my RX8 three weeks ago, but that is an 11 year old car, and it was at an autocross, so I'm gonna say it's not mazdas fault on that.

Apparently it’s a fairly common issue. You might want to look at either solid mounts or poly mounts. Both have a significantly longer lifespan than the OEM bushing, at the expense of some NVH.

Common Mazda problem but I haven’t known them to fail that early. The motor mounts on our Mazda3 went well north of 130K miles. The mounts are hydraulic (fluid filled) which is good for dampening vibrations but over time the rubber deteriorates and the fluid leaks out.

FWIW, similar mounts are used on other makes as well and are equally [un]reliable. It’s just something you can expect to have to replace, like most other bushings. I would just hope the replacements last a bit longer than the old ones, which were premature.
