I like the SR-71 as much as the next guy, maybe even a little more, but really? Here are some more reconnaissance airplanes because they exist too and are cool.

None of those travel in excess of Mach 3 at over 90,000 feet.

Who the hell cares?

Perhaps you would prefer the A-12? It flew higher and faster than the SR-71.

Those look so good in bare titanium. Bear Russian Soviet titanium.

I know this thread has devolved into basically SR = fast and black so that’s it, but you don’t need an SR-71 for all recon missions. The CIA/DEA used turbo prop passenger planes to identify and triangulate Pablo Escobar’s cell phones when they were hunting him, something that (I believe) probably couldn’t be done from 90,000 feet because it involved loitering over Colombia for hours on end. Domestic surveillance or tracking of ground targets is pretty well suited for an UAV. The Boeing E-3 Sentry is used not only for recon, but for forward operating capabilities (essentially a flying radar platform that allows smaller aircraft to extend their effective combat range).

Yes. The SR-71 is cool. Yes, its fast. Yes, to all of those things. It’s also incredibly expensive to fly and we only have a handful of them.

That’s not an A-12, its an M-21. Very close to, but not quite an A-12. Also, if you read Sled driver, the writer(an SR-71 pilot) admits to at least mach 3.5 over Syria. The gov’t claims the A-12 is slightly faster, and it is lighter than the SR-71, but the SR-71 has more thrust and had a bit more time for refinement in the design. Which one was actually faster? We’ll probably never know.
