Notice how companies such as Honda, Nissan, Subaru, Hyundai, etc., haven’t become part of the movement to make ECU tuning illegal? This means…they are on the enthusiasts’ side. Which means that any Oppo can:
Do all the hoons!

That article made me unspeakably angry. . . Not only are automakers (at least most of them) failing to cater to the enthusiast anymore, they are actively trying to eradicate them by putting laws in place against tuning. God why can’t they just go back to making decent cars instead of trying to nanny the idiots of the world.
On the other hand, if ECU’s become untuneable, the demand for standalone ECU’s and associated installations will skyrocket and the prices will come down. Hopefully.

I read it too and thought this whole business was messed up. Reading the explanation from the Alliance about it just solidified my thoughts of this being a way to shut the door on enthusiasts. Since when did ECU reflashes become so dangerous we ban them for “environmental and safety reasons?”

Exactly. I challenge anyone to find a stock ECU tuner that is powerful enough to put drivers or passengers in danger, assuming no driver error. And the relatively few people that actually do significantly tune their cars are far outweighed environmentally by flatulent cows.

I’m quite sure that whenever someone applies a Mountune reflash to their Fiesta ST they don’t cause global warming or deaths...

Man, i was just nestling down to go to bed and was reminded of reading this earlier today. I don’t really DIY or tinker but I am more angry and willing to take to the streets about this issue than i would in support of 1st and 2nd amendment issues.

The companies probably figure people who do work on their cars represent the minority of car owners and think they can do this without many noticing.

I think I might write a well informed, academic post about this in the coming week. . .

Unfortunately the last time we had a petition about cars nobody in Washington cared. (the 25 year law) But good points.

well, not unless we bring some 10,000 modified cars to Washington...
"I have a dream, that one day, I can see my brothers and sisters; with their tuners, muscle, exotics and everything in between, be free of government control. And I have a dream; that one day, we can all be free men and women, and that our cars, our final extensions of our inner expression, can be free with us! Now my brothers and sisters. I call upon all of you, in this hour of peaceful demonstration; Make the world hear the roar of our engines, and may it know the strength of our will! May the ground pulsate and vibrate as our pistons pump, our valves rattle, and our exhausts burble. Make today a day that will be remembered. Make today the day our cars are heard. make today the day our cars become free!"

I just did a reflash onmy Fiesta S last week. So far? No polar bears killed. In fact my fuel economy went up slightly......until it went down because I started using more throttle everywhere
