So, I hate the “Taxi Of Tomorrow” and I love the Crown Vic. Like any like minded person, I firmly believe that the “Taxi Of Tomorrow” is a giant hunk of ape shit. Every once and a while, I have to make my disdain known for these ugly horrible pieces of feces.

They have the center of gravity of a shipping container.

They have tiny ass wheels that won’t take nicely to potholes.

They are made of cheap plastic and thin great depression metal.

They are ugly as fuck can get. That’s pretty ugly if you were wondering.

They shouldn’t be forced on cab drivers since they suck so much ass.

The Crown Vic was Police proven, if a car can withstand that. It can pretty much withstand anything. The Nissan Nvpieceofshit2000 is not proven by any means.

The Crown Vic had a 4.6 V8. The Nissan NVgianthunkofass has some horrid little 4 banger with no pickup whatsoever paired with a CVT.

There was an incredible amount of corruption in play while instating this program. Nissan must be good with bribing politicians.

The Nveatabagofdicks200 has nowhere near the amount of parts availability that the Crown Vic has. Nissan is probably going to make everything super inaccessible so they have to bring it to a dealer to change the oil and shit.

It’s a Mexican made Japanese car. The Crown Vic was a Canadian made American car, but at least it was still an American car.

They don’t look iconic. The Crown Vic was a true icon, the Nissan N-Assmongler will never be an icon.

They’ll all be dead by 200k and five years. Face the truth.

Pictured: The NvPOS2000 in it’s natural habitat. Bet you’ll never see a Crown Vic like that after running over a pedestrian.

Just buy Toyota Camry’s and minivans

Sincerely

No, the Camry sucks as a taxi.

Restricted legroom, uncomfortable backseat, pretty small trunk, expensive hybrid batteries, not durable.

Aside from the trunk (which was a bit small, but no worse than other midsize alternatives), I like the Camry taxis I took the last time I was in Chicago. Also, most of the drivers made it sound like they were good cars for the job. I like the Panther as much as the next normal car person, but for the use profile of a taxi (long stops, stop and go traffic), it just doesn’t make a ton of sense as it was. Sure, the hybrid system is more maintenance, but there are few use profiles better suited to it than urban taxi use. (Garbage trucks, mail trucks?)

Sorry you’re so mad about a car.

Ah, I guess it’s hard to make a good taxi these days.

I’ve also heard that they weren’t great for using during 12 hour shifts because the interiors weren’t so comfortable.

Toyota and Honda actually didn’t recommend their vehicles for taxi use since they weren’t built for it. Which is entirely true. The only good taxis I’ve ridden in were Crown Vics, everything else was total shit in comparison. Worst being a Hyundai Accent.

It evidently is. The Caprice, Crown Vic and the Checker all exemplified when the environment didn’t matter more than passengers.

I totally agree with all points. The NVitro Fertilization development should be aborted immediately.

Interesting point. I did a bit of digging on it, and it does appear you’re on to something wrt. the Toyota angle:

“Our engineers are nervous about it because they were not designed for commercial use,” said Wade Hoyt, a Toyota spokesman, who added that the company sold 270,000 hybrids last year. “Drivers are so enthusiastic about them and they are all very popular, so we don’t have to do anything to promote them.”

Total use cycle costs are definitely a big concern, and I don’t know how improved fuel costs balance against wear items and general maintenance. I can’t argue with your personal taste, and some of your points above have nothing to do with the quality of the vehicle itself and everything to do with personal biases, so I can’t deal with those either.

But, I learned about the Toyota folks expressing concerns in 2012 (and later on the issue of brand image, which was a bit of a problem for the Panther cars late in their lives), so thanks for that.

Well, some of the points about the Nissan are a bit biased against it. But most of those are actually valid.

With the Camry, the Panther is vastly superior in almost every way except gas mileage as far as being a taxi goes.

You make good points, but I like the features on the inside like the usb charger port and large sunroof.

This was a good article. There is no reason why a taxi has to be a specific car. Here we have a Mish mash. Here's a question though, if you the all knowing jkm7680 had to pick the taxi of tomorrow what would you have picked?

I would have contracted Chevrolet to build a 2015 Impala cab. Beefier suspension and possibly a slight wheelbase extension. The 3.6 V6 should hold up alright.

Plus they look awesome, really nostalgic look to them. Photo credit goes out to Kyle Cheromcha.

They’res been a push to do similar things to Toronto’s taxi fleet. Making taxis accessible to the disabled is a laudable goal, I just hope they don’t chose to go with the Never Mind 200.

Our taxi fleets have, like most, bought up every Crown Vic they can get their hands on, but they’re dying out. Most Toronto cabs these days are 4-banger Camrys, and most of those are ex-rentals.

I don’t get the push for every single car to be handicap accessible, that’s a massive waste of money since there really aren’t that many handicapped people out there.
