The Subaru Sambar was introduced in 1961 as Japan’s first Keitora () or kei class truck . This fifth generation Sambar is a long way from the original 2-cylinder powered version, but it still puts the motor behind the rear wheels and offers a surprising amount of versatility for its overall dimensions while conforming with the Japanese kei-car ( keijidsha or light automobile) regulations.

offered for $4,500 in Salmon, ID via craigslist.
Tip from AbnMike.
How much more Idaho can you get than a small town named Salmon with a population of 3,112? Perhaps a town named Potato or Spud could be even more descriptive of the 14th largest and 39th most populous state in the Union, but today’s feature has floated a long way from home.
The Sambar is powered by a 660 cc EN07 inline-4 cylinder gasoline engine located in the rear that puts out 54 horsepower into the rear wheels with the help of an intercooled supercharger. Add four wheel drive and a 6-speed manual gearbox hardly makes this thing a GTR competitor, but it’ll certainly be as much fun as anything else you can find for less than $5k. No i really want a kei van with tracks. I’ve even been to look at some. too much money and too little spousal support (slightly less than none)

Montana is the only place I’ve see those. That one has Helena plates, maybe they are having trouble registering it in Idaho. Cool car but not vary useful for big sky country where interstate cruising at 85 mph is the norm.

Not so far off, but this raises the question..... Even after 25 years can this be registered in ,any states? I don't see any street legal kei trucks in Washington, even ones older then 25 years. I would drive the shit out of this in town, even with my kids in the back if I could.

As I understand it (and I even bought a Nissan Pao that should be here end of June on the strength of it) any car over 25 years doesn’t have to meet emission and crash standards. Actually, it’s 21 years for the EPA but you’d still have to deal with the NHTSA/FMVSS standards if it was less than 25 years old. That also means that if the car was made in August of 1990 and you imported it now, you’d have to meet the crash standards. Check the date of manufacture!

These things are cool, but they cruise at like, 35.. 55-60 in top gear is close to redline.
