For all you Luddites out there. Also, there is an annual Scythe Festival. Who knew?

Considering the dude was using a weed whacker for a mowers job I'm not surprised he lost.

You know, for what its worth Luddites did not fear technology. Nor where they adverse to its existence. in this sense the Luddites get a bit of a bad name these days. essentially the Luddites were a labor union, in a way. they destroyed machines and technologies based on the fear that the common worker would be forced out into the streets with no means of supporting them selves as the machines where brought in to replace the workers. their only fear of technology was being replaced by it. which to be fair give that one machine could displace up 100 men in some cases, perhaps even more. it was fear of change, and the lack of understand of their new rolls in the machine driven work place. But not fear of technology it’s self..

Fuck me, no wonder they call it ‘being scythed down’.

I had no idea they were that effective.

I’ve got one hanging up on my wall actually. We used to have a holiday home in rural France that we converted from an old barn. When we sold it I pinched a sort-of-rusty old scythe and a rather rusty old Charleville 1777 musket.

Apparently, the man with the scythe is a European champion at scything. So you can bet that his technique is excellent, and his scythe is damned sharp.

Awesome finds. What did you do with the Charleville?

It's true. Obviously a conspiracy by Big Scythe and the Illuminati.

Having used a scythe before, it is one bad-ass tool for clearing large amounts of long brush. Great for that task. Not so good for edging.

It’s on my mantlepiece at the moment :) too rusted to be worth anything, although it is genuine.

Here’s some pics of it just after I brought it back.

That is beautiful. I love old and antique guns, and am always in a perpetual state of looking for some interesting old muskets to add to my collection.

Nice ones in firing condition bring about $1200-1500 if they are still flintlock, and percussion conversions like yours are worth $800-1000. Sadly yours is in pretty poor shape, but some parts might be salvageable. The stock looks beyond hope, and the barrel is very iffy. But the action looks like it could be saved. You’d be surprised, to the right collector/restorer, it might still be worth a few hundred dollars for parts to fix up a more serviceable weapon. I’ve seen stuff at collector shows in way worse shape bring $250.

But it’s a cool piece, and if it were mine I’d do exactly what you all are doing with it - keep it around as a wall hangar. It’s a cool gun with a cool story behind it, and a memento of your old holiday place.

Nice! What others do you have in your collection?

Those prices translate fairly well to sterling here in the UK as far as I can see. I had in my head that if it was worth a few thousand as-is (i had no idea on the prices of old muskets) then I’d sell it, but otherwise it’ll stay with me :)

I don’t have anything that old, yet, but I’m always on the lookout. Most of what I have right now is WWII era.

I have a few Lee-Enfields; a 1942 Lithgow manufactured No. 1 Mk III that served as a training rifle at Duntroon Military College in Australia, a 1944 BSA manufactured No. 5 Jungle, and an RFI Ishapore manufactured Mk III .410 shotgun. I’m currently looking for a .22 training rifle, and an RFI 2A or 2A1 in 7.62x51mm to complete my collection. I also want to pick up one of the SIA De Lisle Commando Carbine replicas at some point down the line, but it’s way out of my price range at the moment.

I also love the Swiss Schmidt-Rubin rifles. They are very unique and always get a lot of attention at the range because of their unusual straight pull bolt action. I have most of the set, minus one exceedingly rare carbine model. The original K-1889 rifle is a strange bird, my uncle and I are restoring and trying to make it functional again. It used a “semi-smokeless” propellant so ammo has to be hand loaded for it. I also have the K-1896, K-1911 in both short and long versions, and the K-1931.

Nice! I’d love to shoot one of these old things at a range. Never done any shooting before (and doesn’t look like I ever will with mine!).

Just had a look at the Schmidt-Rubin. That is a weird looking thing. I like it :)

Well, if you’re ever in ‘Murica, look me up. I have access to a private range and I’m always looking for an excuse to go shooting.
