Not sure if English teachers are Jalops or are messing with students.

In either case when walking around my classroom today I noticed that one of my students had a copy of “The Art of Racing in the Rain” sitting on their desk next to their math book. When I asked what made them decide to read it the response was “we have to read it for literature class.” Apparently the English department is not only thinking outside of the box when it comes to novels for students to read they have tossed the box in the garbage.

Or they have taken required reading trolling to a whole new level.

Is this book really that good? I really don’t get into fiction at all, I might have to make an exception though.

I’ve had some really awesome assigned reading in college-level English courses. Nothing really car-related, but I did have one course in which the entire reading list consisted of graphic novels. The best ones, though, are the ones that you don’t expect to enjoy, but end up loving anyway.

Le Conte du Monte Cristo was one such book in high school. Absolutely loved it. I’m sad I wasn’t required to read The Great Gatsby after having seen the film (which I enjoyed immensely), because now the ending is ruined.

I haven’t read it, but it was award-winning, and that’s usually all any English teacher needs to see in order to add a book to their curriculum. I mean, we read The Giver in high school and it was pretty terrible, yet it has awards so it’s in the curriculum.

Actually this is for high school, I teach at a small independent school that requires students to take separate Literature and Composition course each year so the English department likes to go off the beaten path when it comes to reading. Earlier this year the 10th graders read Gatsby and at present they are working through Emerson.

And here when I was in high school I got stuck with The Joy Luck Club and The Scarlet Letter.

Oh and I was supposed to read Catcher In The Rye but I BSed my way through my class on it. Hell, I majored in English in college and I’ve still never read the thing. I mostly majored in BSing my way through English papers about books I had maybe skimmed at best, and was fairly successful at it.

It is really good. It will probably make you cry though. Dogs really bring out the feels.

Oh, that sounds like pre-law? (I kid.)

Sometimes I think the system actually teaches what you did instead of what it thinks it’s doing. ‘Cause I did a lot of that, too.
