What Toyota could be without Scion.

I’m particularly fond of the names for the xB and Avalon.

Seriously, why does Scion exist again?

Sidenote: if you bitch and moan about a fully loaded 200 series land cruiser costing 80 grand here, be aware that the same version there (but with the smaller engine) is 94 large. a stripped out and basic model (with a turbodiesel) is 64 grand.

Pretty sure the Aurion is not the Avalon and rather is a Camry with a different front clip. Also neither their Camry nor the Aurion have the stupid fakemeout window extension on the C-pillar like our facelifted Camry.

Lord I hate that stupid piece of plastic so much.

The Aurion is not an Avalon but rather an upscal-ish Camry. I’ve seen a couple run around Auckland (and one in a gorgeous blue). I don’t think we get the new generation of the Camry yet around here. The Aurion is to the Camary what the Blade was to the Corolla, a car a bit more premium with slightly different looks. That said, I think the Aurion looks quite good.

What an odd collection they sell in Oz. I guess the Corolla hatch is an Auris, but Rukus? Aurion? Kluger? Tarago? FJ Cruiser? Land Cruiser 70? Prado?

Interesting that they can still sell the Hiace. They had to withdraw this from Europe because they couldn’t sell enough to justify meeting emissions regs.

That’s interesting, just the kind of people who stopped buying it here!

The HiAce arrived in I think the 1970s and by the 80s and 90s it was ubiquitous. Then it gradually but inexorably started to fade away. People went back to buying the Transit and Fiat/Peugeot/Renault/Nissan etc designs. One issue was that the original forward control model wouldn’t meet safety regs so they made a semi front engined model like its various European rivals but that didn’t do either and so Toyota gave up. They now sell the Proace, a rebadged Peugeot Expert/Citroen Dispatch/Fiat Scudo.

Interestingly you still seem to have the model that was banned here.

I will point out that the exchange rate is currently 0.77 USD to 1 AUS. So the stripped out one with the glorious diesel would be approximately $49k. That ain't bad.

Scion exists so Toyota can make ads that target young people without alienating their older bread and butter audience.

Too bad they didn’t realize it would take more than ads with techno music and shaky cam effects to sell cars to young people.
