Me bitching after the jump.

Do you really wanna be that guy going,”oooo look at the pretty trees” doing the speed limit? If so, Go Home, rethink life.

Kinja'd!!!

If someone pulls up behind you on a windy road just Pull the fuck over. I dont care if your pushing your car, if they made to behind you than they are driving faster. I nearly lost my mind getting stuck behind someone who thought that they were driving fast enough to not have to pull over. Ended up just wasteing away about half of the drive.

Disclaimer: The road this took place on is known for its fast driving residents, and it is fairly well known that one should pull over for faster dring peaple, regardless. Now i dont drive aggressively in citys, towns, highways, or any where that isnt a country road. And yes I understand that i should share the road and drive less dangerously.

It’s not just you on the road, dude. Other people are allowed to drive them. If they’re driving the speed limit, I have no issues with that. Under that? Maybe an issue. Why don’t you pull over, stretch your legs, catch a breath of fresh air, then get back to driving after a few minutes when they’ve made it further down the road?

Were they going under the speed limit or something?

If they’re at or above the speed limit, tough.

Well, a speed limit is not a requirement. Its a limit, a cap, a ceiling, not a floor. And unless this is happening in the left lane of a freeway its kinda not an issue.

I do understand the frustration though.

If I’m driving the limit, and you’re behind me, I’m sorry. You’ll have to find an opportunity to pass safely. That being said, here in TX there is a tradition where slower traffic will pull to the shoulder, remaining at speed, to allow a faster car to pass. If I’m out in the country, going 75, and you come up on me, I’ll move over and let you pass. And you’d better wave or flash your hazards to say “Thank you.” But I’ll only pull to the side if it’s safe for me to do so. I won’t pull over for you going up a hill, I won’t pull over for you if there are houses in the area, I probably won’t pull over for you in bad weather. And I’m sorry, but I’m not going to feel bad for you if you’re stuck behind me while I’m on the limit. And please don’t tailgate. If you do, I’ll only take my foot off the accelerator.

Yup. And I drive the speed limit. It’s nice not to have to worry about cops.

We’ve all been there; in a situation where we cannot drive as fast as we like, and it sucks

However, I think the USA needs to re-evaluate its speed limits and enforcement paradigm. It is pretty absurd here where driving above the speed limit, and often significantly above, is the rule and not the exception.

Was on an Oregon Highway doing the speed limit (55) and a couple of fuckers decided to do 80 and tailgate me like crazy.

I understand the frustration, yesterday I got stuck behind motorcyclists doing the limit or below for at least 10 miles of my drive home from Lime Rock Park. I wasn’t the only car held up either, eventually the convoy grew to about 10 vehicles (behind the motorcycles).

The only way I found I can go out and drive with ‘spirit’ is to go out at the absolute crack of dawn. Otherwise, I have to go find somewhere remote, which is kind of hard in CT.

In that case, I probably would have pulled off the road and let them by.

Good thing about Oregon is the passing lanes every few miles, so they just used those.

I routinely drive between Austin and Abilene, and it’s all US or TX highway. Much of it has recently been raised to 75 mph, which is fantastic. Some of it is 4-lane, but other parts alternate between 2 and 4 lanes. They’ve started adding signs that say, “Next passing zone x miles”. That way, the impatient people know they don’t have long to wait, and may be a little less impatient.

Conversely, if there are no safe places to pull off for the next mile or two (say a windy two lane mountain highway), riding my ass for the next mile or two is an excellent way to get me to drive just fast enough that you can’t pass.

Why yes I am speaking to the guys in the ITR who tailed me up a very windy mountain road while I was averaging roughly 5 over.

The road isn’t a race course, and I don’t care who you are unless you have flashing lights on your car. Can’t deal with only driving 5 over on a mountain road? Maybe the issue isn’t other people...

I am fairly certain that a great deal of us have likely been in your position. I’m also reasonably certain that I can let you know that my experience having survived being the type of driver you describe (many, many years ago), and becoming the type of driver I am, has to do quite a bit with my accepting of a number of factors... chief among them that there are definitely times and places for behaviors, and that pushing other drivers so that you can drive fast is probably one that doesn’t benefit anyone in the long run.

That said, I have let guys in cars I know to be faster pass me so that I can hear / see / live vicariously through them when I know they want to pass but are driving courteously. I guess I’m still a bit judgmental. =)

I’ve said fuck it and gone around these people if it’s safe even if it isn’t entirely legal. I got stuck behind a Super Duty going EXACTLY the speed limit on some of the best driving roads I’ve ever come across and wanted to pull my hair out. It got to the point where I’d pull over to put distance between us to I could actually enjoy the damn road. I understand they’re doing the right and legal thing and I’m being an asshole in a BMW, but come on.

I am very familiar with your driving courtesies in your state. I have traveled a lot there. I especially like the “move to the shoulder and let people pass”. The only thing I disagree with is the 70 plus speed limit on some 2 lane roads. You crest a slight hill and there is a driveway or two and you know if someone pulled out it would probably be a major accident.

Its was legal for me to pass but being a tight road. And the other person thinking they were going fast meant that no safe pass time arose. I did try to pass but had to go back into my lane to avoid a blind crest.

I agree that 75 is a bit excessive in some places. But it has also shaved 20 minutes off my drive to Abilene. Texas can be beautiful in places, but sometimes you just want to get the hell where you are going!
