Speaking of awesome: Beer. Tell me you spring/summer list.

Here’s been mine so far:

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA
Lagunitas DayTime IPA
Allagash White (perennial favorite)
Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager (guilty pleasure)
Dogfish Head American Beauty
Bluejacket Swallowtail
Three Stars Peppercorn Saison
Maine Beer Company Mean Old Tom

All of them come highly recommended. Yes, even the Strawberry Harvest Lager. I’m not in the least bit ashamed that I have two six packs of that sitting in my fridge.

I’m on board with the strawberry harvest lager - I imagine it’s like a not-very-acid shandy? Pumpkin beer is usually crap, but strawberry I can see having a good chance. Not all shandies are any good, but enough are...

I saw the Strawberry Harvest Lager yesterday while I was out shopping. I’ll admit I was intrigued. I’ll pick up a bottle or two.

I’ve been really bad about keeping up with “normal beers” recently.

Though, that said, I was super impressed by Destihl’s Counterclock-Weisse (Berliner-Weisse), Founder’s Blushing Monk (It’s a belgian which has been brewed with more raspberries than any beer has any right being brewed with, and it tastes like what I always hoped Lindemann’s Framboise would taste link), and well, I’m obsessed still with Firestone Walker’s Parabola, but that’s a hard one to find, and not cheap if you do find it.

I have an overstocked beer fridge (seriously, there isn’t enough room), and I don’t have any “standard” beers at the moment, last night I just wanted a beer, and ended up drinking a 2013 Stone Double Bastard because I wouldn’t feel bad not sharing it with anyone else. It’s kind of a #firstworldbeerfridgeproblems issue. =)

Essentially, yes. Just a basic, crisp wheat brewed with a shit ton of strawberries. It’s not acidic, but also not too sweet. It’s one of the few strawberry beers that’s actually worth its weight in, well, anything. At 4.2%, they’re just as mild as a Guinness, and much easier to drink. I can knock down three in two hours just sitting on the porch and reading a book.

Yep. That was my line of reasoning for thinking about changing it. (“What would I tell my son?” and 10 out of 10 times, if I wasn’t responding in anger, it would be the ‘positive re-enforcement’ option).

I can’t believe I didn’t really think about that before. I feel a tad guilty.

I know the feeling. The Allagash and the Abita are the only two “normal beers” I have in mine right now, the rest seasonal brews of heavy hitters. I had a bottle of the Blushing Monk a few weeks ago, and while it was damn good (it also knocked me on my ass; didn’t realize it was 9%er), it just didn’t find it’s way into my top lists. It tasted a bit too much like, well, wine. And this is coming from a guy who thought that the Allagash Victoria Ale was excellent.

I haven’t had the Firestone Walker Parabola, but I am a significant fan of Oatmeal Stouts. I’ll have to see if I can find that one.

Otherwise, I have 750s of Maine Brewing Company IPA and Peeper Ale, Dogfish Head Noble Rot and American Beauty, Brooklyn Sorachi Ace and Local 1/2, Allagash Curieaux, and Ballast Point Sculpin. I’m actually not really sure when that last one will be consumed, as I’m just not in the mood for excessive hoppiness during this time of year. We shall see, though.

And that Destihl’s? Delicious. Kind of a PIA to find in my neck of the woods for some reason, though.

Well, it gets very mixed, errr, mid scoring reviews. I don’t generally like stouts but it was in a sampler I had recently, so I tried it and actually loved it. It’s creamy, malty and bitter, BUT it does have a sweetness to it. It’s an “imperial” stout. It’s not as strong as you would expect a stout to be though, and no gross, lingering aftertaste. Which, is probably why I like it. Do you have BJ’s Restaurants near you? You can try it there.

I had Blushing from the bottle and on tap... and on tap it is much better (not sure why, larger post brew bottle conditioning conditions? fresher? Better storage?), but it will kick your ass. =)

Parabola is, IMO, the best Russian Imperial Stout I have ever encountered. Easily worth the hype.

I’d drink the Sculpin soon, as it tends to fall off the older it gets. The rest of your stash sounds fairly tasty, though I still don’t know what to think of Noble Rot.

And Destihl’s? jesus am I ever happy they distribute here. Such good beer.

Yup. Quite fine.

She was weak, probably from all the crack. Here’s how it went down.....

I went for a walk from my house came back and some crackhead was pissing on my neighbours stairs, I told her and her buddy to “get the fuck off my lawn”. She said she was going to shank me if I came near her. The guy said they was leaving but that I should let her finish.

She kept yelling at me, and I told her I was on my property and she better get the fuck off. She then spouted some nonesense, grabbed a cinder block and threw it at me. I was only worried about my car because it was nearby, but frankly she didn’t seem to take notice of it.

Then she kept telling me she lived on the west side and her boyfriend was some tough biker dude who was gonna come fuck me up and that I was a scared little bitch.

I didn’t want to fuck with the dude with her but he was calm, he was some hoodrat but he never threatened me really. She was fucking out of control.

What a stupid fucker. And sorry for language...but I am annoyed.

My selection is really simple, the only drawback is that I can’t find any information New Zealand and that alcohol is quite expensive here. Do here’s my selection for back when I was in France.

La Trappe, trappist beer from NL. I especially love the strongest one (around 11% but doesn’t taste like it)

Trappiste Rochefort 10, another trappist beer, but brewed by monks in Rochefort, Belgium.

Maredsous, from Belgium

La Chouffe, it’s not exceptional, but it quite nice to drink, doesn’t matter which one

Ninkasi, it’s a small French brewery in Lyon. Their beer is not the greatest, but their special brews are really nice.

And some of the others regular European beers, especially a Pilsner Urquell or a Leffe.

If sexism genuinely is a concern in this space, NSFW and all of that, then Rule No. 1 should be changed, and “Be excellent to each other” would be highly appropriate. “Assume positive intent” would be another suggestion.

In Germany, in the driving laws, they have The Doctrine of Confidence , where you are trained to count on the other driver to do the right thing, and vise versa.

Gamecat, thank you for the feedback. I would go a step further and recommend that, under the banner of no NSFW, a short but explicit list of words be banned from top-level headings for posts, including douche, douchebag, fuck, bitch, and batshit babe. All of those are entirely sexist terms.

This is ironic to read from me, because Dusty threw a yellow flag at me just the other day for NSFW content, but in my defense, I was trying to make a point, and the NSFW guidelines I’d read were, it turns out, the superseded guidelines.

Kinja'd!!! Gamecat235 > Rusty Vandura - www.tinyurl.com/keepoppo
05/12/2015 at 23:58

Kinja'd!!!0

I’m not sure I actually follow with regard to one of those words, as fuck has zero connotation regarding gender. In fact one of the greatest things about the word is it’s absolute flexibility and freedom in usage.

Now Batshit Babe is, to be honest, a much more difficult one to deal with. Because it is completely ingrained into Oppo lore and history. But I do understand, and share the concern. It is clearly pointed in a direction where it requires objectification to even exist.

(Also, ironically, douche, in it’s many variations, is almost exclusively a denigration used against men, which would mean that it would qualify as sexist, just for the opposite reason most would possibly assume).

We/I don’t want to make the community one where there is a style guide for all posts, or where adults cannot appropriately adult, but at the same time, we don’t want to actively exclude anyone either. It’s a fine line, and it’s one that, even after two years and many revisions (including the slaying of some sacred cows here), is still an evolving work in progress.

For me (and speaking only for me), the important aspects of the guidelines are that there are some rules which exist to set forth some structure, and that we expect everyone to behave like responsible adults. I don’t want to get into the weeds and define what is, and is not, sexist, racist, classist or anything else.

Good morning. Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the thoughtfulness of it.

I think when you speak of lore and history, you run the risk of allowing inappropriate things simply because they have been allowed already for a long time, and that is not a compelling reason. It is in many ways the worst possible reason. But it’s not like I want to go to your barricade over it or attempt to elicit a tedious debate.

With regard to douche and the like, these are terms used against men precisely because of the female connotation. Girly man! Nobody calls anyone an enema, do they? It’s as sexist as it gets.

But hey: I’m glad to be here and I appreciate you taking me seriously. Thanks again.
