How the hell do you read this thing? Edit: I’m an idiot. Figured it out.

It’s a bog standard thermometer here in Norway, perhaps they look different elsewhere?

And yes, I did see your edit, I was just curious about what confused you (apart from the fact it’s a low quality picture that is.)

I’m used to seeing American thermometers that have scales on both sides, like this:

Kinja'd!!!

So I was reading one side as a scale from 5 to 5 and the other side as a scale of all zeroes, which (obviously) made no sense to me. Why I was looking at it this way I don’t know.

Ahh.. hehe.. I should’ve guessed that. I have a few that looks like that as well. But I’m so used to doing F to C and C to F in my head that I don’t really need one that have both scales.

It’s quite easy..

°C x 9/5 + 32 = °F

(°F - 32) x 5/9 = °C

I know how to do it, I just don’t like it! Fahrenheit is a better scale anyways : P

You could replace 9/5 with 1.8 and 5/9 with 0.5 and get almost the same results, perhaps that’s easier. As for what scale is best.. well.. I don’t care, I like celsius because water freezes at zero.. other then that they’re pretty much equal I’d say.

Cold in Norway? Your winter was a summer compared to ours. The AVERAGE! temperature here in Feb was -16C.

But it’s only ten in the morning there right? It was 5C here then. And the real temperature here is 19C (30 in direct sunlight).

We’ve had a couple of rather warm winters lately, I think the average in Feb was -3c or something. In my town -30 is not really that uncommon, but neither is close to 30C in the summer. But you’re correct Norway is not that cold, it’s just that people think it is because we are so far north.

We had a warm winter in 2012 but then thanks to “global warming” we are told that the winters around here are getting colder each year since. Can’t wait to see what next year brings!!

I just remember filling up with fuel in the dark, in the wind, at 5am in -24C and thinking this is hell on earth hahaha.

Hehe, the thing about global warming though, is that it’s the median temp that gets higher, some places will probably be MUCH colder.. but this is not the place for that discussion :)

-24c and wind.. sheesh.. that’s not fun.

10 at best is what they are calling for. And that's not factoring windchill.

Basically the theory is that the west half of the north american continent gets way warmer and the east way colder due to the movement of the jet stream.

Anything below -20C is not fun it’s just cold in my opinion. lol. I stay indoors as much as possible. I was coming from out of town that morning, and wondered if I should stop at my house to change my clothes from yesterdays clothes but then I thought after fuelling I was not getting out of the car again so I didn’t and went to work wearing yesterdays socks lol.

Why would you want to convert?

We used to often use °F but since forecasts have been given only in °C for decades we’ve just got used to that.

Yup, and Norway will get colder as well once the Gulf Stream no longer works as it does now.

When it comes to cold though I’m somewhat strange. I wear jeans and a t-shirt if it’s warmer than -10C, probably a jacket if it’s below -25C. 5C and up? Shorts and tank top if I’m at home, Shorts and t-shirt if I’m going out for anything.
