Achievement unlocked: rust holes.
So, I cracked the paint on the rear quarter awhile ago and I figured I’d look into this weekend.
How deep does this rust go?
Err ... all the way I guess.
Hit it with some Rustoleum and hoping it works. Maybe I’ll cut a chunk of a road sign and rivet it on there.

That stuff doesn’t stop unless you completely neutralize and encase it. With this kind of visible damage, you need to get under it, because I bet it is much worse under the car.

Don’t say that. Every time somebody surface fills a hole with Bondo and leaves exposed rust on the back side, a puppy dies.

It’s crazy - you’d think in the last 50+ years that they’ve been making fenders like this, they would have found some other seaming idea - one that doesn’t put on its sexy dress and eyeshadow for Mr. Rust.

Saturn/Lumina APV and Corvette figured it out amongst others! Damn those slutty fenders!

This fender is rusting the same way that almost every fender since 1959 or so has, and the closest thing to an actual fix is to replace the outer skin in whole or part and de-rust the inner fender where the two laminate together. *then* put things back together with a heck of a lot of sealant. As you can imagine, not a lot of people do this.
There’s not much of a way to get that rust between the two faces without lifting the outer fender or cutting through it in some way, sad to say. Moisture trapping that accelerates this is encouraged by... oh, stuff like the crinkled panel that you have near the door.

This is the only rust on the car. I hit a fence and the paint cracked and exposed the metal.

Yeah, that crinkling cracked the paint right off and exposed the bare metal to the hungry salt.

I think that may be one of the secret reasons for the awful quasi-box fender abominations that seem to be on every car these days a la Prius. I know there are some good aerodynamic reasons for them, but they also don’t have to have a steel overlap except right on the bottom face. Better breathing and draining almost certainly.

I should note, that building a fender as if it’s the ‘30s out of a single layer of metal also works, if that metal is aluminum. Mostly. HURR HURR LAND ROVER

Well, sure, but it’s easier for Earl George Henry Slapnuts to weld a frame where it looks okay than bodywork, isn’t that right? I mean, unless the frame were to rust away from the inside out. That’d be craaazy.

That means your car is getting lighter. Better MPG :P

Is the next achievement “gaping rust hole in passenger side floorboard”? My dad had a Beetle that had reached that milestone.

Haha my dad drove a fleet of beater trucks as I was growing up. I loved watching the road go by through the floor. It was less fun when it was raining.

Yeah, you go from “That’s so COOL!!!” as a kid to “That’s utterly horrifying!” as an adult.

“Maybe I’ll cut a chunk of a road sign and rivet it on there”
A fairly bad ass idea for a solution!

I’m not sure it really will solve anything but it’ll make me feel better.
