Hello... Sorry to bite off of a fellow Jalop, but I need opinions, and the NPoCP format seemed to be a good way to go about getting them before we list the car.
My father is currently the owner of what was my grandfathers 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo. It’s technically a 2 owner car, though my dad has put but a handful of miles on it since taking ownership of it. The car is all original aside from the front bumper, which was damaged and replaced after my grandfather cracked it by running into his push lawnmower while pulling it in the garage. There was no major damage of any kind. This car is otherwise accident free.
My father is planning on selling it. He has one price in mind, but personally, considering the prices I’ve seen higher mileage examples sell for on eBay and elsewhere, I think he’s low-balling himself. I will not disclose either of our prices yet... Before I get to the prices, I’ll get to the rest of the pics.
As you can see. the exterior is in very good shape... The paint has minor blemishes here and there, but there’s nothing a good detail couldn’t fix.
As you can see. the trunk is clean, and the carpets are in good condition... and yes, that is the original trunk mat.
As you can see from these pics, the engine bay is clean, and everything is 100% original and correct. The engine runs strong, having been serviced regularly and on schedule. The manual transmission and clutch work flawlessly.
For those who might have trouble reading that, and to confirm for those who don’t... Yes, that says 37,442. That means in the last 26 years, it has averaged a tad over 1,440 miles per year.
As you can see here, the dash is in excellent condition, and has no fading or cracking. If you look closely, this car is still equipped with the High-end (for 1989) Blaupunkt stereo head unit. The stereo is still fully functional, and the speakers, which are in great condition, sound excellent for being 26 years old.
The leather in this car is almost completely flawless... No wrinkles, wear spots, fading, or cracking to be found anywhere...
Not on the passengers seat...
Nor on the drivers seat
See what I mean?
It is an almost pristine example of a 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo. It has 37,442 miles on it. No accidents. Interior is in excellent condition. Personally, I think considering all of that, and the fact that
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
, that this 944 Turbo is worth around $25,000... My dad seems to think it’s only worth about $15,000.
So... Who gets the Nice Price, and who gets the Crack Pipe? Let me know in the comments below.

Super NP for $15k. If I had $15k, I’d be calling right now, if all the maintenance is done and on paper. That being said, it’s definitely worth more than $15k, and especially at that extremely low mileage.
That car is beautiful, and a family car like that, I’d try to save it if possible.

It’s a turbo not a plain Jane 944. 15k is more than reasonable

EBay shows 3 recently sold turbos with around 50-70k miles for around 16-19k so 23-25k for less than 40k miles isn’t that far fetched

Hmm so it seems that non-turbos sell for much less?
I know needs change and whatnot but it’s kind of shame it’s going to be sold at all — OP could one day be a third-generation family owner

I don’t know that market well enough to give you an educated opinion, but when you list it list it as “same family since new” instead of two owner or trying to explain things.

Trust me... I soooo wish I had the money to buy it... I’ve wanted it since 1989 when I was 8 years old. The idea of him selling it off saddens me... It is quite a car.
I don’t suppose 25,000 people would bum me a dollar? Lolz

My Grandfather is now 90 years old, and isn’t legally allowed to drive anymore... My dad is selling it because no one else in the family seems to want it, aside from myself, and my brother. My brother isn’t buying it because he has bills to pay, an awesome super-genius 5 year old son to take care of, and a BMW 528i XDrive to pay for, so he can’t afford it. I can’t buy it because I am unfortunately unemployed currently, and thus cannot afford to sink $25k, or even $15K on it any time soon, even though I really wish I could.
Maybe one day I’ll get a 944 Turbo, it just sucks it’s not going to be my grandfathers... It has special meaning to me because of who he is, the life he’s lead, and his accomplishments... I’ll give you the abridged version of his life. He started playing Cello at the age of 3, went on to various prestigious music schools, was mentored by a famous composer, who wrote a bespoke piece specifically for my grandfather when he was only 12. 6-7 later, WWII broke out, and he signed up... He became a marksman, and was sent to the European theater, where he was wounded by German gunfire, for which he received the Purple Heart. After the war, he married my grandmother, and continued playing the cello, and became the Principle Cellist for the Philadelphia Orchestra, and after his tenure there, went on to spend the remainder of his career as the Principle Cellist for the New York Philharmonic. He was also an instructor at the Julliard School in NYC. And to think, that’s really just the cliff-notes of his life.
I think, as a just in case, I’m going to write down the VIN, so that if he does indeed sell it, maybe I can hunt it down some day and buy it back.

Goodness gracious, what a tale. Amazing man has amazing taste in cars.
My old man never had a Porsche for sure, but I do have some regrets letting some family cars slip out of the family tree. If I were older and had some coin, I can think of three of my dad’s cars I would KILL to have kept...

Gorgeous car, 944s aren’t generally collector status, or at least not held in the high esteem the rear engined car are. I have an old friend who is a semiretired European car mechanic and has worked on these many times, he swears he would not go near on. Enough on the negatives, original cars are getting more and more love, this is the high performance version, low miles, excellent shape. Beautiful car.
First as the others have said, I would try to figure out a way to keep it in the family. Delay, show dad the trend in prices for older 911s the past few years, tell him the 944s are next...”but we just need to wait a couple years, the thing in a bona fide investment” Buy some time.
Of course if you have to sell it, I think it would bring between what you want and what your dad want to sell if for, 15K probably being more of a local price, but I think it really goes up if you reach a national audience. If you have to sell start at the 25K and see what you get, or an Ebay auction with a high reserve to test the waters.

I’m wracking my brain trying to figure out a way to come up with $25k... But unfortunately, I haven’t come up with anything feasible.
I said it elsewhere, and frankly, I was half joking/half serious about it... I wonder if 25,000 people would bum me a dollar... lol... I’d gladly take the “super-mooch” status to buy and keep that car in the family... lol... I really would.

Especially after reading your earlier post above regarding your grandfather’s remarkable life and what he and that Porsche mean to you, it would utterly break my heart to be in your position.
With that being said, I would have absolutely no issue with sending some money your way. That Porsche belongs in your family and that’s all there is to it.
Can’t your father hang on to it until you’re comfortably able to purchase it from him? You need to have a serious talk with him and explain how important that car is and how much it means to you, that it needs to be passed along to the next generation in the family. This isn’t just about a car; it’s about cherishing your grandfather’s life and having a part of him with you when he’s gone.
Seriously, start a GoFundMe or whatever and get the word out.

Wow... In all honesty, I wasn’t actually expecting such an offer from anyone to help me get the cash up... that’s not how things usually work out for me... so Thank you, I really appreciate the offer. I’ll consider starting a GoFundMe... Dunno if enough people would donate to it, and even if enough people did donate enough for me to buy it, I’m not entirely sure if I could afford to run, maintain and insure it, but I suppose preventing it from leaving the family is enough.
Again, thanks.
