Let’s pretend we have a sum of money, call it 5-10k over 6 months to build a track/autocross car. It has to be street legal, and retain the ability to carry a wide for an afternoon without too much conplaints. Obviously we want to start with a miata, mazdaspeed would be nice but rather pricey.

What would you build with my money?

So far I found a crap miata for 2k and a standalone ecu for 1k, wheels and tires for 3, and I’m not sure what else. Any takers?

I saw one being sold at a Honda dealership in Washington for $11,000, so there must be cheaper ones out there.

The cheapest one on carmax is 20k, but cars.Com has 6 or 7 for under 10. Not a bad deal I would say

Find a miata thats already been super/turbocharged. Most support mods will likely have been done, maybe extra wheels tires.

If you’re unexperienced, just get a standard one, get track wheels/tires/pads and a roll bar, drive it until you are bored then look at first suggestion.

I wanted an ST205 badly growing up. Ultimately the insurance premium on RHD coupled with questionable previous owners was enough to lead me elsewhere.

I’m not very experienced, I’ve autocrossed my 328 and spent the last year canyon driving way too fast in the German hills and autobahn, which has honestly taught me more. I like the idea of building as skill increases though.

‘84 Corvette Z51 without drivetrain, junkyard vortec 4.8 with LS7 cam, LS6 intake, ported heads, injectors, and headers. Heavy duty radiator and oil cooler, along with some sticky tires, good wheels, cross braces and soli swaybars, C5Z brakes and a D44 rear diff with 3.93 gears and a TKO 5 speed will make it track worthy. The necessary modifications and repairs to make everything work together might be an additional $1,000, and you’re all set to make C7s look bad at autocross with gas money to spare!

Not too easy but definitely the fastest you’ll go for $10,000 In a daily drivable autocross car.

Actually Mazda Speed Miata’s are not that great for autox. you have to shift too often to say in the powerband of the turbo with the 6speed they have. You are much better off picking up a na/nb 5 speed with a turbo installed already.

Shit I hadn’t really considered the 6 speed. I definitely prefer 5 speeds on tighter roads and courses. Are the gears on the 6 really closer or did they just throw a second overdrive gear in and call it good? I only used 2nd last time I crossed anyway lol

I answered my own question. Turns our the pushed the 1.0 gear from forth to fifth and the 6th was the overdrive.
