Don’t do the screwdriver one. You’ll end up breaking the handle. The plastic isn’t designed to take had much force.

yeah, that seems like you’d have to have a lucky fit anyway.

No screw could take that much force to break loose and not be messed up anyway even if you could transmit that torque

Just do it with Craftsman or Snap On. Instant replacement warranty, just don’t tell the internet how you did it.

You can end up with screws that can’t be turned loose with a normal screwdriver and will still be fine after MOAR POWER but the margin is pretty slim. It has to be, say, a #10 or larger screw and typically stuck from galvanic corrosion or even rust (the takes 40+ years kind).

I would still end up spilling oil everywhere using a screwdriver like that, I prefer the tried and true use of a funnel.

Another good fix for this is to stop using an impact gun to fasten your air cleaner. Those only require 36-60 in-lbs

YUP! Same deal when you put a 5 foot pipe on your ratchet

Ignoring the latch on the pump handle designed to do exactly this without fucking up your gas cap (which might be attached to your car). I’d really like to have somebody show me this “hack” in real life one day.

Though, you can also use a smaller wrench on screwdrivers that have a hex shaft and not have to worry about breaking the handle.

#3 on that list is by far the stupidest thing I’ve seen all day.

Also just a chart of the ways normal people normally tie neckties isn’t really a “hack”. Some surprisingly cool stuff mixed in there though.

not all places have the lock on the handle, they are for example illegal in Australia

its gonna torque right out of the phillips head screw it’s in anyway

still, I assume if you do this in such a place the garage attendant will walk out and call you a dumbass. so still, not much point

that oil one is dumb as hell. If you want to spend 20 hours getting 4 quarts into a car, go nuts. The only thing you need to know is shown right on the bottle...

Fuck yeah, Surface tension!

I once had to put diesel in a tractor in the middle of a field and forgot to bring a funnel. I cleaned the rubber mat with a damp rag and rolled it into a funnel. LIFE HACK! Except we called it “MacGyvering” back in the day.

slow and steady torque won’t break such a screw loose. It’ll round off the head way way before. An impact driver is the only thing that can help in such a case, and that setup can’t do impact work well enough since longitudinal force would need to be applied to the screw to have any shot

I figured this one out on my own. I didn’t even own a funnel for a long time.

I’ve stuck a very small wrench on the shaft of a screwdriver before (not the handle) in places an impact driver wouldn’t go, with great success. Using one hand to press the screwdriver in place and maintain tension and giving a yank on the wrench is the correct technique. I’m just saying that I’ve tested something akin to this, and while an impact driver is superior, there is a time and place for alternate approaches. Anything with a #3 Phillips head on it and up won’t get sheared regardless unless technique is really bad.
