!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! reminded me of all the things that make motorcycles cool. Motorcycles are priced in most anyone's budgets, and motorcycle companies are willing to make daring, risky engineering choices for the sake of performance dominance. Like when Honda decided to squeeze as much power from 250cc as possible.

To be specific, that's 250cc of four stroke, street legal power on pump gas. And at one time there was a horsepower war in the low displacement bike market. So with only 250cc to play with, how can you make power without forced induction? Lets look at the equation for horsepower:

Kinja'd!!!

In this equation, T stands for torque and N stands for engine speed. Not going to get a lot of T from 250cc so... what about N? Yes! That's the solution. Rev it to high hell and hope for the best. Well, Honda does more than hope for the best. They made a screamer of a little bike.

How else can you enjoy 19,000 rpm on the street? And assuming you could somehow obtain an F1 engine and stick it in a "normal" car, how much would that cost? I think this is what makes motorcycles cool. They give you access to technology that would otherwise be very exclusive.

Note that the CBR250RR is not to be confused with the modern and modest CBR250R. The old babyblades are not very common in the US either but some did make their way over and they are not priced too badly. Over in Europe, Asia and Australia though, the babyblade is quite accessible.

Sorry if this is too bike-y for Oppo but I'm in a moto-mood.

No one on Oppo likes bikes, so I demand you take this down.

I won't deny that the Honda was a better bike, but the Suzuki RE5 was quite a bit of kit as well. Single rotor Wankel engine (497cc/30cu) with 62hp.

Oh god. I need that. It sounds exactly like a mini F1 car!

Very cool. I love how even a big name like Suzuki took risks like this.

I love the styling of that bike! Are there any more common examples that have the same cues? The round headlights, and the taillights?

It was a HUGE risk though, almost "killed" them. Yamaha made a 650 Turbo in the early eighties, seem to remember that did not go all that well either.

A lot of stuff from the late 80's, early 90's looked like this. My favorite bike from this era would be the CBR900RR, which was sold in the US. For the sake of not being too hung up on Honda though, here is a Yamaha FZR.

Is buying a bike from the 1980s or 1990s a bad idea? Are parts still accessible?

Not a bad idea. Parts can be an issue, aftermarket plastics may not fit the same as original plastics and originals are usually out of production. Mechanically, I can usually find what I need. However, many of these older bikes didn't get many miles on them. Clean, complete and unmolested examples can be had for reasonable money. Let me direct you to a big time waster of mine, http://raresportbikesforsale.com/

They are rare, especially in the US. They pop up though. This is an old listing from Colorado and its reserve was at $5,000.

A friend bought a plane jane mid 90's ninja 250 back in 98 or so and it stunk. I had no idea some of these 250's were worth a damn. I owned a 2 door 5 speed tempo at the time and still felt cooler than him (yes I was wrong) but seriously his was a dog and then he took a spill and the thing was trashed. Love me some 125 dirt bikes but 250 in street trim just seemed like a glorified moped or at least his did.

I think the early GSX-Rs have aged well. Unmolested examples are getting harder to find though and values are rising. You find a clean one for cheap, pick it up now.
