I just registered for a winter ‘rally’ called the Carbagerun, through the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, France and Andorra in February 2016. Step two: find a car. What car should we buy?
Requirements:
1998 or older
according to the regulations the car can be worth no more than €500, although this is not rigorously checked. Let’s say €1000 asking price as a hard limit, preferably €800 or less.
decent heater
comfortable enough
will have to be able to seat 3-4 grown men decently and store a lot of kit
will have to be able to handle winter weather. This does not mean it has to be tall or AWD.
not a horrible gas hog
gasoline and diesel are both welcome
preferably at least somewhat interesting
not a Subaru Legacy wagon. I used one the last time I participated, two years ago
a valid inspection, road legal
available in Germany or the Netherlands. My copilot is German, so we can choose if we want to run a car on German or Dutch plates
speed is not an issue, you don’t win by finishing first
Here are some sites you can use. I’ve used English language links. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
Route:
start: The Netherlands
finish day #1: Basel (Switzerland)
day #2: Turin (Italy)
day #3: Avignon (France)
day #4: Toulouse (France)
day #5: Andorra (finish location)
Disclaimers: Speed is not an issue. I’m not sure I’m allowed to participate yet as there are fewer slots than registered teams, there will be a lottery next week. I will postpone buying a car until this autumn, I’m mostly looking for inspiration and an interesting discussion. I’m unable to consider pleas to be included in the team, with the exception of one who’s already aware.

how about a pre-crashed (let's you competitors know you mean business) Buick Regal for Tree Fiddy

Too new, as it doesn't meet the <1998 clause. Still an interesting suggestion though, both the car itself and picking a damaged car. It will have to be less damaged (functioning headlights...), but some body damage shouldn't be a problem.

How about a grubby 2.0 litre 406 Break?

forgot the age part. Agree that it is an interesting idea. No one would expect a Buick.

That's a great suggestion actually. I could even mount my current winter wheels.

1990 325iX. Great cars— full time AWD that can send up to 50% of the power to the front wheels on a well balanced chassis with a strong durable engine. Not only will your heater work— but you'll have leather seats! Not sure about the prices across the pond but they go for between $1000 and $2500 USD in the States.

It may not be roomy enough for you, but it is an Alfa and I can only assume the DTM edition means it's sporty.

It's a great suggestion, but I actually own a 1989 E30 (320i Touring) and I can tell you a drivable mechanically sound 325iX here won't be anywhere near within budget and won't have leather seats in 90% of the cases. They usually don't even have factory AC, which is probably strange from a US perspective. Not that you need AC in winter, but that's besides the point. The engine alone will be worth too much, let alone the other parts. A 325ix that I'd trust would be €3k+ here.
I've been shopping for these last year .

Audi 80 or Saab 900?

GM Saab 900 or pre-GM Saab 900?

I prefer Pre-GM. Although the GM-era cars aren't completely terrible, and may be easier to find in reasonable shape. A 5-door would have good room for your mates & gear.

A Mr. Loeb did pretty well in one of these...

It'll be roomy enough I guess. Interesting suggestion too, I like those cars. I do fear I might not be able to convince my co-driver to buy something Italian. I'm thinking Japanese, Peugeot/Citroën, Swedish and non-luxury German vehicles will have most chance, although I'm open to all suggestions.

That's a great suggestion actually. The Xsara is a generally unloved (=cheap) yet reliable car with huge/cheap parts availability.

A Volvo wagon with a T5 would be another interesting choice, but I didn't notice any in my quick search. You have to get something interesting to keep the theme going after starting with a Legacy wagon.

A €150 English vehicle without a valid inspection. I'm brave, but not that brave. I like how those look though.

Ahh, didn't notice that it didn't have an inspection. It's hard to read German over all of the freedom I'm enjoying over here. I'm just going through the list of stupid cheap cars and seeing what looks interesting. How about something Foxier?

Finally, FINALLY, I found something with at least some Freedom in it. This was almost a Mustang, but FWD was too communistical for that nameplate.

Definitely a pre-GM Saab. I had an'87 Saab 900T. A blast to drive, but fitting 3 and possibly four grown men in there might be a challenge.

I quite like some of these suggestions, thanks! I actually think both Citroens would be best because they meet the requirements best. They might be a bit too cheap though.

I'm not brave enough. Horrible condition, hard to get parts for, gas hog, impossible to resell. I'd rather have that Rover, which says a lot.

In 'Murica parts are a dime a dozen. I'm really surprised at the prices I'm seeing though. I know that most of these are pieces of shit, but I can't get a wrecked car off of copart for some of these prices.

The thing is, many of these vehicles need a lot of work (€) to become road legal again. More than what they would be worth after the work has been done, meaning they're not worth it. If they're of the unwanted variety they tend to be worth their weight in scrap and not much else. I'm talking about the €150 cars here.

Yeah, I was surprised to hear from someone on here about being denied because of rusted rocker panels. In the US, inspections vary from state to state, but for the most part it's just a check of your lights and brakes and emissions for newer cars. I'd have no trouble getting those registered pretty much anywhere here.

‘95 Rover 827 Si, 187.000km, €750, located in Saarbrücken (might be a bit far away for your liking)
>1998: Check
less than €800: Check
decent heater: Probably
comfortable enough: Most definetely
able to seat 3-4 grown men decently and store a lot of kit: Check
will have to be able to handle winter weather: Probably
not a horrible gas hog: It’s a Honda, it’ll do 90mpg
at least somewhat interesting: R-O-V-E-R
not a Subaru Legacy wagon: Check
a valid inspection, road legal: TÜV until next march
available in Germany or the Netherlands: Check
Should even be pretty solid on the speed front.
You can thank me after you won the rallye. (I get 30% of the prize money, k)

Ha! My co pilot is a huge Honda fan, and this has a Honda V6 in addition to the huge Honda connection. It’s also got a British electrical system... Anyway, interesting suggestion. I’ll forward it.
It’s far from me, but only 2 hours from him (Heidelberg)

Pity— I had to sell mine when the frame rusted out completed— got bought by a guy with a 318i who was going to swap in the motor and drivetrain. That E30 is the only car I ever miss...

Interesting read on your shopping. They sold the 325iXs here in the States and in Canada, so it shouldn’t be required to import it... My dad bought the one he gave me up in Chicago and drove it for 3 years in Detroit (hence the rust cancer). Also, they’re not all wagons— mine was a 2 Dr Coupe.
There was an Auto 4-door that looked pretty pristine selling in Maryland a couple months ago for $2500, I was seriously tempted...
