NatGeo has a nice three-part special on the Motor City that is neither gawking at ruin porn nor based entirely on applauding outside saviors for moving in and opening cupcake/bicycle/Whole Foods stores.

Now I want them to do all of Michigan......Including Flint.
I'll never forget the night where something like 13 homes burned down because of arsonists "protesting" the fire department cuts. Also the one time I got lost and saw "FLINT IS CLEAN" graffiti on the side of an abandoned house......Detroit is like Birmingham when compared to Flint.

My favorite part was when people tried defending that it was actually the DETROIT silverdome. Or even just "The Silverdome". I realized just how ignorant people are of Michigan. Oh and I was upset in that Detroit article that there was no mention of Mexicantown. Most cities have a Chinatown and a "little italy". Detroit has fucking Mexicantown and little Poland. We need to advertise this dammit!!!

I actually remember seeing Jalopnik Detroit and being quite proud that such an organization would acknowledge us. . . I'm sick and fucking tired of people writing us off as "that place that used to make cars that only went straight." Believe it or not, there are quite a few places in the City that are still wonderful, full of culture and potential, and pleasant to live in.

Anthony Bourdanes Parts Unknown on Detroit wasn't bad. Sure it had some ruin porn of hipsters, but it wasn't too bad

If you have Twitter, Aaron Foley is a good follow. He still writes, just moved on to a new venue.

I once met a Mexican within view of the Hotel Yorba. We had to swap some stuff from the trunk of his car to our car shortly after we came across the Ambassador Bridge.
Spoiler alert - they were car parts that we were picking up for one of the other engineers to bring to work and everyone involved worked for the same Tier 1 supplier. Even though it was totally legitimate it still felt appropriately sketchy.

.....If they were honda parts.....are you sure it was legit? Cause mexicantown is where stolen hondas are chopped up and torched. At least it was when there was a big honda boom in the mid 2000s.

Not Honda parts. We were coming from a plant in Canada and the parts had to go to an engineering center in Indiana.

Well Detroit has a long way to go still. Considering they gave Saddam Hussein a key to the city (clear sign of corruption somewhere) and actually went bankrupt? I am surprised they recovered quickly though.

No deep analysis, more like shock that a US city went to bankruptcy before things turned around.

So you haven’t heard of San Bernardino, Stockton, Mammoth Lakes (all in California), Harrisburg (PA), or the entire counties of Jefferson (AL) and Boise (ID)? Detroit’s not the first or last US city to declare bankruptcy, don’t be so shocked.
