Post your ultimate summer song!

Kinja'd!!! "E. Julius" (soonerfrommi)

Kinja'd!!!1 Kinja'd!!! 47

The weather has been great here in Paris, and it's got me thinking about that wonderful time of year when the nice cars come out, the grills are lit, and the days are long. So in the spirit of the season, post your one song that evokes the summer mood better than any other.

I'll kick things off with one of my favorite songs, "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" by Vampire Weekend. The light, playful guitar riff and danceable rhythms always take me back to my home town. Cruising by the lakes with the wind blowing through my hair; soaking up sun on the boats or on the beach; enjoying an Arnold Palmer in the hammock. I can't wait!

Fun fact—that music video was directed by this guy:

Never heard this before but I'm digging it 15 seconds in.

When I hear stuff like this I assume they're just playing with the instruments as hard/fast/loud as they can as opposed to playing the instruments.

Not sure if it's the ultimate summer song but I always turn it up and roll down the windows when it comes on.

Last summer it was this. Problem was a close second. As far as this summer... I don't know yet.

It's got a slick groove—essential for any laid back summer song. I'm going to have to add this one to my list.

My only complaint would be its a little short. And that's not the worst complaint in the world.

Nope. A little drinking, some singing, etc. I remember a few summers where we'd go to central Michigan and go canoeing as a huge group. Nothing but bonfires, laughter, and Jimmy all day. Even as a kid it was a blast!

I don't plan on moving back there, but the memories are awesome. I'm going to figure out a way to do something similar with my kids, family & friends here in WA in a few years (when all the babies in the group are older). I'm sure we can find a relaxed canoeing area here to camp and "party" at.

June, July, August, early September. Long beautiful days, warm weather, and the views...

If we could get that for the other 9 months of the year, it would be the most perfect place on Earth.

I like that band a lot. They can go off the rails and do some weird shit, but I like it. This was their debut single back in 1995:

This song is from the album "Subliminal Plastic Motives", which is one of my favorite albums. They have a knack for pop, though:

This album of b-sides (Porno Mint and Grime) were available for free, along with a few other albums' worth of stuff. They still might be. And if they sound familiar, they did the song that ran during the credits of the first Shrek movie ("Stay Home"). Oh, and also because this:

Hmmm. Yeah, I'm not a dedicated follower of fashion, though I do maintain a personal style. These sorts of "Lennon" glasses or "Ozzy" glasses or whatever are, in fact, pretty dreadful, but I think they were going for some freewheeling hippie vibe (also a pet peeve of mine—I cannot abide by hippies; these hippies will not stand, man) but I let it slide since these are Euros and they have a different concept of hippe nature-lover types. They seem to at least be more sexy than our current American iteration of flower children.

God, I cannot bear to talk about it anymore.

Kill all hippies.

I don't follow it much myself either, this is just based off of my own observations of the youthful euro trash roaming the streets of Paris and the hallways of my school. But at least the (surely idealized) versions of 60s hippies I learned about in history classes had ideals. Most of the hippie type people these days just want smoke weed and attend corporate sponsored music festivals.

Not that there's anything inherently wrong with either of those things, but a lot of them look pretty dumb while doing it.

There's a balance in everything. I think at the other end of being sucked in by an image and manipulated by promoters is the ridiculous rejection of all things commercial in search of the authentic, genuine, sincere, unadulterated experience. Whatever that is.

You know who I'm talking about. The true hipster whose every belonging, every action, every word, every desire and personal preference has been carefully thought out. Those people are (my favorite all-encompassing insult lately) worse than Scientologists in their self-loathing and intricate policing of behavior.

Kinja'd!!! E. Julius > ACESandEIGHTS

I'd agree with that. Fortunately that's so much more difficult that those people are encountered far less frequently.
