I know this plan has flaws but I really want to buy a CDM Lada and register it in Canada to my grandparents house and then bring it back to North Carolina and just use it with Quebec plates and just bring it back for inspection or whatever.

These were sold here in oz years ago, they have a group of followers but I don't think Ladas are held in high regard by most. Still see a few driving around, including a cabriolet version, so they can't be that bad. I'd have one over a Rocsta(Korean CJ jeep knock off)
