Aaaaaand paid twice that to close out one of three remaining student loans. My wife and I have gone from owing an Aston Martin to owing a Mustang GT Premium with a few options. Soon we will only owe a Mitsubishi Mirage and then we'll be free of those greedy assholes forever!

wow congrats! That was the first significant debt I paid off in my life, and possibly the most rewarding. I see people all banged up over student loans. Sick these days even at a state school you graduate 6 figures in the hole. Luckily mine was about a quarter of that 12 years ago so I was able to do it.

It is ridiculous. I am glad Canada has not followed the us down that particular route.

I think here is a good balance between the european model (where tuition costs almost nothing therefore students have no stake) and the US model where it's crippling.

If you were to do an engineering degree here, your tuition over 4 years would be close to $25-30K.

mine was 26 all those years ago. I was talking to a friend of mine whose daughter is going to the same school. 25K full retail for in state residents. But supposedly they take very few local students anymore because there are so many out of staters that want to go there for significantly more money.

So glad my parents put the hammer down on me to stay in state at a state school, the private school I wanted to go to would have put me in 100K territory even back then

I did 1 year of college and it was $3400 bucks for the tuition plus about $1000 in books. Overall I think my student loan was $8500 bucks for a year of college.

Seemed somewhat reasonable to me.

I still owe roughly the price of a base 911... Trying might best to pay it off at a reasonable rate while enjoying travel/life/etc. 3 years into payments... probably another 3 to go.

I've got mine down from a Camaro ZL1 to a three year old Chevy Sonic. Should be turning that into positive savings before this time next year. It's a great feeling. Congrats!

Thanks! What was really unfortunate was my wife had a full ride scholarship that went away when her school (pharmacy) was reclassified from undergrad to graduate 2 years into her degree. An expensive technicality. Also, tuition doubled during our time in school.

At least we both got good jobs to pay the loans off. Almost there!

It's a tough balance.

Wife and I are still working down our undergrad and grad school loans, can't wait to pay those off and have some more cash for project cars :D or saving for a future kid :\

These outrageous student loans premiums and interest rates are seriously crippling the financial abilities of anyone who went to college in the last two decades. Can you imagine how much more money would be injected into the economy if people didn't have a mortgage's worth of debt right out of college?

Agreed. I spoke to some doctors with debt 2-3X my amount and they all said a quick payoff plan is nice and all, but don't live off ramen in a studio apartment. It'll disappear in due time, right around when I dip into more debt with a mortgage...
