Hand Brake.
I'm confused with the steering.

Yeah, it looks like a solid front axle.

One of the mechanisms we used on Soap Box Derby cars as a kid is to just turn the whole axle, I imagine that's what she's got going.

She's now in her 70s, considering this was 68 years ago and she looks older than 1, and it makes me wonder if there are any pictures this awesome of my grandparents as kids. I mean, back then you'd pretty much only get a portrait taken once a year at most unless you happened to run across a professional photographer out on the street.
It's going to be interesting once this current generation has grandchildren. Digital photography didn't happen until after my childhood was pretty much done, but anyone younger than me will be able to show their grandchildren nearly everything they have ever done in their entire lives, assuming nobody deletes those pictures (I've been meaning to print off a few of mine just for added security) and that's just awesome.

Yeah, that's what I thought. But it seems the wheel would rub on the body very easily. Turning radius of a Clio V6.

It's gravity powered, Newton will prevent you from pulling a U and going up hill, just need something to keep your heading. I imagine she went full lock a lot though :P

I think about that a lot. Pretty crazy, isn't it? We live in an era of mass documentation. So much so that people are taking pictures every day, of their surroundings, of their food even. And considering it's all uploaded to the internet, with all the exif data available for everyone to see. People in the future will have no problem looking things up about the past.

Ahahah. Yeah. She probably never understeered into a wall because there wasn't enough steering angle to make the wheel lose traction. But I know for a fact that no matter how well you drive, you will end in a wall in one of these.

Never ended up in a wall in our soap boxes, but our practice hill ended in a cul-de-sac and brake failure (aka I didn't pull it hard enough) meant you were hitting a curb and going end over. I wonder how many concussions I had as a kid with the car continually landing on my noggin haha. Only broke one arm and lost two teeth (which were just baby teeth so who cares right?). I imagine my dad would be arrested for child endangerment today.

We used to have both downhill racing and hot laps (being pushed!). I held the record for hot lap, because I was the lightest kid on the lightest soap box.
I think that soap box still exists... I should take pictures next time I visit my mother.
And yeah... I and the other kids had so many bruises and concussions all of the parents would probably be in jail for neglect.
