Today I picked up lunch, and gasoline, in the same spot. There's a cheap 'n cheerful Mediterranean joint called !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that happens to be located in a gas station. I don't know if I'd truly call them the king of falafel, but it's pretty good falafel.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

After paying for my gas and buying 2 !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! energy drinks for $3, I then stepped over to the King of Falafel side of the building. I wanted a falafel pita and a salad. All the sandwiches come with fries and a drink. I asked if I could have the salad instead of the fries, and offered to pay an upcharge if needed.

BUT SANDWICH ALL COME WITH FRIES! YOU DON'T WANT?

Nope, no fries, just the sandwich and the salad.

This went back and forth a couple times until he finally understood that there could indeed be a person on this earth who wants no fries with their falafel sandwich, and then he had to think real hard what exactly to charge me for this falafel-no-fries plus salad combination that was so far outside the bounds of his understanding of his own menu.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, Mr. King of Falafel, but I really just wanted a falafel and a salad.

Tasty falafel though!

In my experience most of these people don't want food, they want money for alcohol.

But I did have a bagged lunch I didn't turn out to need once, so I gave it to a homeless woman and she seemed grateful so there's that.

True story: I talked to a street outreach worker who was formerly homeless. He said (I'm quoting here) "if they turn down an offer of food, they're playing you." I know it's only one data point but it stuck with me.

I offer food (usually carry a Clif bar or fruit). The ones who accept seem grateful for the assist.

Yeah, I knew a guy who knew a guy that just went out and panhandled for extra money. Then again, I've known worthless lazy drunks that were to lazy to even earn their own money panhandling, just show up at their relatives, mooch a bit, then go back to their camp.

I would drive miles to fill up at a petrol station that also sold kebabs. Though I wouldn’t eat it in the car, because there in lies the craziness.
