For the love of cars, please don't. On top of looking bro as hell, it makes your tail lights damn near invisible during the day, and looks really dim during the night.

If you reeeeeally want to do it, at least use smoke, not flat black.

Signed, everyone else.

I seem to recall a post a few months back, where an Opponaut's school acquaintance blacked out his taillights, and was rear ended shortly afterwards.

I want to burn peoples cars down who black out their head or tail lights, burn them to the ground. Why would you make your car more dangerous????

I was driving behind someone recently who just had no tail lights. It was an intense game of guess when i'm going to slow down

We should have the legal right to just ram into the back of these morons at stoplights.

If done properly there is zero diminished light

I can count on one hand ones that have been done properly with almost no diminished light.

I remember that. He didn't even use plastidip though, right? Didn't he just like spray paint it or something?

Yep. Just straight up black paint.

You know, on some vehicles smoked taillights look pretty slick. Provided they're done right. Spraying a coating of non-light emitting rubber over taillights? Yeah, that's isn't right.

I have a set of smoked taillights for my 9C1 Caprice (if I ever get around to putting it on the road), but I also am taking apart the light assembly and improving the reflective capabilities of the light and making it so there would be no diminished light. But most people don't think about that. They just dip the lights and think they're good.

Exactly. If it's done properly you don't even notice, other than maybe thinking it looks nice. The problem is that almost no one does it properly.

What about the douchehats that tint their front windshields...yes you - you at least thought about it. Cars exclusive for show - fine; country back roads at dusk - don't need it.

Tell me your kidding... Super trend in 'these here parts ' (NC/SC).

I might need to do a photomontage for a post to request it to stop.

The double down deadly is >30% tint all around, drivers glass down and 'shadesbro' behind the wheel.

Oh wow. I think I've seen a really mild front tint before, still dumb as hell but 30%?

I believe you MIGHT win a legal case (after the fact) if you drive into one. but likely it would be a huge hassle.

I've often pondered this very thing when I follow someone with two of three brake lights out.

Kinja'd!!! Pinkslip > sm70- why not Duesenberg?

Kinja'd!!!1

Actually, you may have a legal defense to an accidental rear-end collision with a car that has purposefully impeded the visibility of the brake lights.

It is the responsibility of the driver to know what the traffic in front of them is doing, but there has to be some blame on the car in front with improperly working/illegal brake lights.

On a slight tangent, I wonder if a car with a rigged brake light (on a switch to disable the light at will) would be completely to blame for getting rear ended. It would show intent to create an accident.

Steve! Can you chime in on this?

..Do you mean <30%? The percentage is the amount of light let through. So 30% would be a medium tint while 5% is (i think) the darkest you can buy.

I think that the darkest a person should tint their lights is this:

Kinja'd!!!

Has that nice dark tint but you can still see the red lens that's under it. The light probably still shines through fairly bright.

Kinja'd!!!2

It is physically impossible to add a dark coating on top of a light housing and not diminish the light output even by a little. If by properly you mean not really too much then yeah. If you were to put a coating on then put a brighter bulb to account for the light blockage you may be correct in that there is not net diminished light.

Per spec you are correct.

Any sightings in your area?

Curious if it is localized to an ignorant shop nearby.

I did ask a cop one time as to his take on people actively visually impairing themselves; Indifferent about it. See we can all wear sunglasses at night. - Off. C. Hart

It depends on how bright the lights started out as, but even that might be too dark. Definitely not darker though.

Kinja'd!!! AM > Sir_Stig: and toxic masculinity ruins the party again.
04/14/2015 at 16:56

Kinja'd!!!1

The lights on this particular car are actually LED so I assume they would still be pretty bright which makes this dark of a tint fine but with a regular incandescent bulb I wouldn't even go this dark (not that I would tint my tail lights anyways).

I hate blacked out tail lights. Yes it can be done right but I’m the only one I know who’s done it right and not lost any light. The reason I removed it and warn friends who go ahead and do it anyways is that if you do get in an accident, most provinces in Canada legally don’t allow light tinting. Any layer of anything on top of the lights puts you at fault in an accident.

I’ve seen people with spray-painted lights I’m pretty sure, you can barely see anything.
