The one metric stud in the otherwise normal box of Dorman 610-258 1/2-20 wheel studs - why did you do that? I mean, I *could* put my hubs back together with one stud as metric for the shits and giggles, but I don't want to - and they don't even look the same.
This of course means that putting studs in the hub flanges has to wait, which means that putting the bearings in the hub carriers has to wait, which means the hub carriers and LCAs going onto the diff have to wait, which means... Well, it means that old horseshoe nail rhyme is more true than people know - expressly re: fasteners, even.

Man I hate O'Reilly's

That gif simply does not express enough frustration. But, I can't fault you for including some TNG on Oppo.
I'm sorry the O'Reilly guy sucked. That seems to be a theme there. :-/

My local O'Reilly is pretty good - they've made a practice of hiring young, sharp guys, and one of the managers is a machine shop veteran. So, while a lot of the time they don't *know* things, they're not terrible at getting things figured out, and they're willing to work with you to get things done. O'Reilly's main computer info server is decent as well. Now, the O'Reilly that shipped mine the box o' studs with one missing... yeah, eff those guys, apparently.

I'm not ragey, it's just kind of a "huh?" I mean, I guess some guy in that other O'Reilly (for some insane reason) was comparing two very similar studs (for an unusual application, really small head size), and ended up putting the one inch one he'd pulled out in the metric box and vice versa. Or something. Suspicion, based on what cars use those studs, is that it was somebody with a Jaguar or Cadillac.
I suspected you'd comment, because TNG gifs. Heehee. Did you see my post a while back?

Ha! TNG, like vintage mustangs, are my oppo bait. And no! I didn't see it, but I'll check it out now.
I've been meaning to ask you if you know about the oppo IRC some of us have got going. You should stop by sometime. There's almost always someone in there, though conversation picks up in the evenings, generally. Go to kiwiirc.com, the channel is #Oppocah. Or, use whatever IRC client you'd like. We're on the freenode server.
Hope you're having a good day. ^_^

Things going pretty well so far today. I have several irons in the fire, but mostly I'm waiting on input, so it would take *egregious* slackness to hear anything about my... well... lack of productivity at the moment. Back when we were doing the Oppo tinychat I did some blathering there, but honestly it took somebody posting the links to remind me to do - that and me slacking after work at a computer instead of an xBox or being up in the shop. Hmm, I ought to step out for a long lunch and get my rear driveshafts made...

My issue is with a local one. But I don't like that they never seem to have waht you need on hand it's always "I'll have the part in an hour!"
What happened to me: While rushing to get ready for a car show with the Montego, I ran to OReilly's in town as a last result as Advance (my normal go-to store) and Autozone (don't like them either) didn't have what I needed. I admit it was an obscure part. O'Reilly says they have it it'll be there in 2 hours. Fine. 2 hours I get up there and it's obviously the wrong part. I even showed them a picture of it and gave the part number.
Well, they don't have that part. So ok I'm out 2 hours waiting and I miss the car show, it's what I get for rushing to complete the car for the car show.
What REALLY bugged me was that the Manager apologized, made a photocopy of the page with the part info, told me he'd contact Edelbrock and get the part ordered, took down my phone number and name and promised to make it right.
Well, it's been 2.5 years and I'm still waiting on that phone call.
I called Edelbrock a few days later and they sent me the part no problem. It just really, really pisses me off when people say they'll do something - and don't.

Yikes. I'm not aware, at least, of my local O'Reilly making promises they can't keep.

It's sad, but I've pretty much written off all O'Reilly's because of 1 shitty manager that over promised on what was most likely the busiest day of his year (the car cruise went right by their store and they were a stop on it) but at least 3 people were involved in the store and frankly no one cared.
Advance Auto - the guys know me by name and by car and never disappoint (multiple stores) so I really have no reason to give O'Reilly's another try.

Our local Advance is stocked with pretty good people, but they're overly geared to dumb people in some respects and don't seem to have the network support that the O'Reilly does. Sometimes more stuff in the store, but trading off with less ability to get wacky things for insanely cheap and worse cross-referencing/research. The NAPA here in town used to only keep in stock weird things that people would - nonetheless - need to have in stock, but they'd have anything else the next day. Odd brake parts and the like, bearings, and so on. The chief advantage there was the manager, who was the most legendary parts-encyclopedia I've ever met. Like... remember the part number for an Oldsmobile valve gasket off the top of his head type stuff. He's no longer there, though, nor another guy who was very sharp, and the new management are trying (small building) to style things more in the manner of a mini-Pep Boys. Sigh.

yikes.
and that dude sounds awesome with the parts encyclopedia brain haha
Advance just merged with (bought out?) CarQuest so they're network has grown considerably. I noticed right away on their screen of more available parts transfers.
And they had to do a store transfer for me last week when I was working on the Montego for Valve Cover Gaskets and some more bolts for the valve covers (had 8 i needed 12).
I was a little surprised at their lack of gaskets. had one set for 30 or 40 bucks on hand for one of the most popular V8's in Automotive history, but they said 45 minutes and it was there in 40.

The first news I had of the Advance/CarQuest merger was somebody doing work in our shop buying a bucket of transmission fluid there - branded CarQuest. The biggest problem I've noted re: Advance and their parts handling is that it's just not as encylopedic as the one at O'Reilly - at O'Reilly you can *technically* look up a lot of parts by measurements and obscure qualities to cross-reference, and it works well. They also have done well for me for carburetor kits and such.

Only real experience I have with O's system is their website, which was rough to get through.
All I know/need is that Advance has the Montego in their properly lol

The website is a square peg in a round hole with regard to their inventory system. If you can work with whoever is running the system in the store, you have better odds of sourcing things, but the sorting of the website doesn't correspond 1:1 with how their inventory works. It *does* help to have tools in place for what you're looking for, though - I tried several times to get through inventory for a block heater cord for my Benz, but their system isn't perverse enough to list the right part # for something that odd, and the generic/universal searches didn't consider that such a thing (the cord) might be more universal than its makers let on, nor have a proper category. The right part, as it turns out, fits Powerstroke and Cummins as well, so once that piece of information was in place...

oh man
But I see how that could be an issue and not really their fault, or at least a common issue.
All the time I'll go on summit or jegs and the SECOND I hit that it's a Mercury all the performance parts vanish.
It's the exact same motor as the Ford 5.0 why did you a-holes take away all my parts?!
Oh, because Trick Flow never guessed someone would want their heads for a Mercury.

I laughed at the "2.5 years". I was expecting a few weeks, month maybe.

If it's the same motor as the Ford 5.0 can you buy parts for the Ford 5.0 or are they Mercury specific?
![]() 04/14/2015 at 15:39 |

oh I just buy the Ford parts, just a pain when searching is all hahaha.
The only things Mercury Specific on my car are some body, trim pieces, and interior. It actually has a completely different dash.

Yeah it's funny I park next to a buddy who has a big block Ford Torino GT from 68 (Same year as the Montego) at car shows and it's funny to watch double takes, because they're identical other than the exterior trim and interior details.
He's the blue car on the left I'm red on the right. His sits a lot higher from bigger wheels/tires and rear shackles.
