My sister had a hedgie. It was pretty normal then got really mean and would hiss at everyone. Turns out its new water bottle was stuck so it hadn't gotten any water for a few days. Oops.

They can get pretty grumpy sometimes, that's for sure.

No, just spotted it by the road a while ago.

Fun fact; it's a mammal but it lays eggs!

Yeah that's right, their young are called 'Puggles' just for added cuteness. It is related to the platypus. I have seen a platypus in my dam but it's on dusk and hard to get a photo that shows them.

It's an echidna. In 3rd grade we studied Australia. I did a project on them. They're monotremes.

I'm not sure but I think he is two years old. The breeder she got her last hog from had some adults they weren't breeding anymore and she wanted to give one a good home, so she picked up this little guy.

Here, have a Goanna. Found him in the chook pen a while back. It solved the mystery of the disappearing eggs. He hasn't returned since getting busted.

Ha ha, yes it's true. Just yesterday morning two Wedge tailed Eagles were eating a dead wallaby beside the road. I spooked them coming around a corner so couldn't get pics.

did you know a recipe for roasted hedge hog is one of the oldest written British documents known to exist. I have been strangely obsessed by this fact since I learned it about 4 days ago. I'm not trying to imply that we eat Neville here or anything. I just think its interesting that the British are so in graved in a culture of bad food they went as far as to write the recipe down over 8000 years ago.

Haha that's quite an amusing observation. Makes sense though, the British food is… sometimes lacking. I remember when my girlfriend was in Spain she came across a restaurant menu that included hedgehog and she was not amused.

I believe they're still eaten in some Asian cultures (China, maybe Vietnam?). I don't think the one she saw on the menu in Spain was actually being served, but was referencing a dish prepared in the same style.

I was offered a hedgehog once by a guy from whom I was buying a used iPod. He was moving across and couldn't bring the little guy.

What is caring for one like?

Yamahog could probably give a better description than I can, as I've never been the primary caregiver for one, but it doesn't seem to be a whole lot more than caring for a rodent. You have to make sure it has food and water, give it a wheel or something to exercise on, keep its cage clean. They also need baths every once in a while so you can clean their spines, and if you want to keep them nice and sociable it's important to take them and out and play with them often.

They're naturally nocturnal so they're usually pretty active at night, but from what I've read and experienced they can often be conditioned to be fairly active at the beginning or end of the day time as well. As long as you keep them socialized and you know how to hold them and stuff, they're usually not going to hurt you. You can let them crawl on you or hold them, and unless something startles them they won't spike up. In my experience though, even if they're very sociable you do have to be prepared to get pricked every once in a while, but it doesn't hurt too bad.

My girlfriend's last hedgie had a problem with biting when she first got him, but he stopped doing it after a while. They love to burrow and explore, so if you can give them an old towel or blanket to root around in when you have them out of the cage they love it. Nothing too soft though or their spines might get stuck in it. They also love cardboard tubes:

They're pretty fun little pets. Cuter than a mouse or hamster in my opinion, and everybody always seems to get a kick out of them when they meet one.
