What are some common motorcycle engine-to-car swaps?

I know far less about motorcycles than I do cars, but…

I was just thinking, I can understand the want for a motorcycle engine swap, seeing that they rev so high.

1) Does that mean that they lack torque? Would they have trouble moving a much heavier car body?

2) What are they like in terms of fuel consumption?

3) What happens regarding the transmission? I've heard that some don't work easily with reverse gear, so sometimes they just run the engine backwards…

4) Are there any extra hurdles with regard to making it street-legal? I realize this varies from place to place, but are there any places where motorcycle swaps into cars are subject to a different set of regulations than car-to-car swaps?

5) What are some commonly-done or recommended ones? I always hear about the Hayabusa, but what else is there, and into what kinds of cars?

I can only think of two. The Smart/Hyabusa swap, which seems awesome

And the Corbin Harly v-twin engine. (The merlin never made it to production as far as I know though.

Not "common", but CBR900 in a Ford Escort.

I remember a few years back jalopnik posted about someone who took and Austin Mini and threw a Yamaha R1 engine in the back along with its sequential manual transmission. Made a killer noise

busa motors.

yea, torque is the big issue. Bikes make the HP due to RPMs, not torque. so you would have to re-gear the trans or diff to make it work.

Minis with a hayabusa engine is not that uncommon though.

motorbike engines in smart cars are quiet common, bmw boxer engines in Citroen 2cv is popular and kits are available. There are all of kit cars (super 7 style) with Honda fireblade engines in

It's pretty common to see motorcycle engine in hillclimb "prototype" race car.

Suzuki 1000 GSX-R is quite popular.

For street use I think it might be very difficult/expensive to make a good car powered by a motorcycle engine.

Reverse is a big obstacle some people never find a solution for. Same with parking brake.

That is, once you figure out the output flange to differential puzzle.

Kinja'd!!!

As far as street legal, all it needs to do is pass emissions. If the recipient car came with OBDII, you're screwed. Safety inspections would be a problem too without the reverse, or the parking brake. You could do a line-lock for a parking brake, but a lot of states like mechanical linkage.

In the case of the Z-Car Mini conversion (above) there I don't think there are many states that require emissions from a car that old.
