What's up with the offset? I had a 56 bug years ago that briefly had an offset issue, first time I had some passengers in the back I didn't get far down the road and we could smell burning rubber. Got out and saw the guards had been contacting the tires and had cut a nice 10mm wide groove around the edge of the rear tires. The paint on the guards blistering from the heat made me sad.

The tires are just too wide for the wheel.

Ah. My issue was from swaping the '56 body onto a '67 pan. I bought some widened four stud rims with stock offset but apparently the beetle grew 2" wider between '56 & '67. All the wheels protruded about an inch outside the guard, had a custom set made and it was fine then on. What year is yours? I want to get another one again one day.

This one is a '67 Euro (basically a '66) and the other one is a '61.

Nice. Just realised I made a mistake on the later year pan I used, it was a 1970. Had the 12v electrics and ball joint/disc brake front end, that's why I had the four stud rims. This is in Australia so not sure if our model years are the same as other countries, VW had its own assembly plant here and some oddball models came out of there occasionally.

Oh I know all about the weird Aussie models. My girlfriend lives in Australia and loves VWs so I know all about them.

Cool, I recall talking to you a while back, unless there's another beetle guy with a girl in Australia! Is she Aussie or just over here working or beetle watching?

Are you putting all-terrain tires on that bug?

Honestly I put whatever I can find on it that fit, summer, winter, all seasons. The ones off to the side in that picture are stock replacement tires.
