Hard to tell what that *was.* It looks like it could be either a Kawasaki Ki-48 or Ki-45.

I found the original photographer's Flickr page, which has it tagged as a Betty. I don't think that's right though; what's left of the canopy framing is more suggestive of a Lockheed Hudson.

I googled "betty bomber" and found this picture, which is clearly the same picture as f86 posted. It was taken at Rabaul. I've looked a lot of pictures of Bettys, and I'm not convinced it's a Betty either. I'm also not convinced it's a Hudson. Look at that quarter-circle curve at the back of the main canopy, just above the engine. I think it's a Sally or a Helen.
