Welcome to the "Nice Price or Crack Pipe DOTS Head to Head - Youngtimer Edition" from Germany.
It's spring time so everyone wants to buy a nice car to enjoy a bit of driving on a sunday afternoon. Since you obviously don't want the maintenance hassle and price tag associated with a classic car you are looking at cheaper and more reliable options. So you end up searching for cars that were quite common when you were growing up in the late 70s and 80s. These wake up a warm, nostalgic feeling inside you. In Germany we call those cars "youngtimer". I found two examples for sale parked on the same road just a few hundred meters apart from each other. Which one would you choose?
The BMW E28:
Or the Audi 80 B2 CL:
I bet you've already decided, right?
And I haven't even told you the best part yet! It's a 525e.
Yes, the Eta-engine. The failed BMW experiment that was designed to combine inline six petrol engine goodness with diesel torque and efficieny back in the glory days when "Turbo" meant performance instead of economy. So, the car is a bit of a unicorn.
And it's a manual!
Sold, you think!
But wait a minute. What's this?
Okay, it needs a bit of paint. Until then it adds character!
Panel gap. Pfff, factory standard!
Hmm, the trim should be looked after as well. But parts are cheap, right?
And a bit of rust, so what?
Oh...
Sadly the picture of the interior is useless, but trust me when I say that the front seats were ruined. You can kind of see it in the trim detail picture.
So what does the seller want for this car? There wasn't a price tag on it. Yet it would surprise me if she (yupp, I stumbled into a neighbour who told me about the seller) is asking for more than 1,400€. Maybe it's even less considering the state of the car. And who knows what's hidden underneath?
So, what about the Audi then?
It's not special, it's not beautiful, but it really looked clean and healthy.
No detail pictures necessary. Just buy it and drive it next sunday to a Creme 21 Youngtimer Event.
The seller is offering it for 1,900€. That seems to be a bit too much for a 75hp beigemobile though. It costs even more than the black distress parked behind it. So hackle shamelessly.
Your turn. Which one would you buy and why?

I’m afraid you’re right. That’s why both of them are still for sale...
