In a comment to my last piece about !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , knsaber2 !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to a video of the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! app for the iPhone. Since I was judging electronic engine noises without ever having experienced them, I decided to try it. How bad could it be?

In a moment of weakness, I got all five cars that the app offers. Then I shot a video testing two of them - the Ferrari (which, of course, they can't actually call a Ferrari for copyright reasons) and the generic American muscle car.

Hearing these engine noises coming from my BRZ was, as I say many times in the video, ridiculous. Because it's only reading G-forces in various directions, there's a variable delay between what you hear and what happens in reality. It would be different if there was an OBD2 interface sending actual RPM data to the app, which is likely how cars that actually come with such an artificial engine sound system do it.

But what I really want to know is this. If I select the orange Lamborghini, does it turn my BRZ into a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ?

Hah, if that tied in to the actual rev counter, it could be a ton of fun.

Idea:

Pair an app of this type to a bluetooth OBDII setup that can read RPMs. Modulate the sound based on the revs of the vehicle, even include a manual/automatic setting so it can make downshift / upshift noises relative to the vehicle you drive

Wait

What the fuck am I doing here?! PATENT PENDING PATENT PENDING PATENT PENDING

I'm pretty sure other apps have done this, but maybe not your particular way...

that's alright but my DD has a small block Chevy. No need to compensate with fake noise.

I know some apps / "sound generators" have used the ground modulation from the lighter plug to "determine" RPMs and vary sound that way, but that's barbaric

IMHO fake exhaust noise is essentially fraud on a performance car. Might has well have a speedometer that lies to you into thinking you're faster.

My old man's Ford Landau didn't need that, you could hear the spark plugs straight from the AM tuner, really, REALLY LOUD. For some reason, no filter whatsoever on the 12V lines feeding the radio.

Not that that engine needed fake noises anyway, probably a Ford Y-Block 302 (5.0 liter) V8...

But I digress. Anyway, enjoy this pic. His car was just like this.
