I have a fascination with old, forgotten places, and a couple of weeks ago, I explored this abandoned farmhouse in Virginia. Someone who lived there liked Harleys a LOT. There were motorcycle posters and magazines all over the house. Judging from the calendars, food labels, and phone books I found, the place has been abandoned for about 15 years. It's amazing how quickly a place goes to crap once people stop maintaining it.
It's rare that I find places intact, and this one was no exception. It looks like it's been thoroughly vandalized by kids. Still neat to check out, even if there wasn't much left behind. I'm always on the lookout for old cars, but haven't found any since the collapsed church in Maryland with the '58 Rambler Six and '60 Chevrolet Biscayne.

It's very cool and all (although that sink looks like it has blood on it), but for the love of the gods and all that is holy why was that guy barefoot?
EDIT: Yes, I understand that it's Jagvar (everyone knows he loves going barefoot and hates shoes). Your comments are appreciated and unnecessary.

It's definitely a thing.

What's the market listing for this house at right now? And in what county? I'm going to assume it is listed at least 300k over what is should be worth. So tree-fiddy?

I don't like shoes, so I don't wear 'em. Simple as that. Don't worry, I've had my tetanus shots. ;)
There was (fake) blood in spots throughout the house. Looks like kids used the place as a "haunted house" one Halloween.

It's just Jagvar, he prefers the natural way.

I know that ( everyone knows that), but seriously, always wear shoes when exploring abandoned buildings.

You'd love Detroit.

It's in Linden, Virginia. Not quite sure whether I was in Fauquier or Warren County. It was right on the line.
Now what's the land worth? Probably not a ton. If it were closer to DC, it would be a different story.

I loved it when I went in January! I took plenty of photos of the old Packard plant.

I have a fascination with old, forgotten places [and a devil may care attitude towards hookworms and tetanus]...
Just kidding. That is really fascinating.
Just curious though, is what you're doing not trespassing? I really don't care if it is as long as you aren't doing any damage and it really has just been abandoned; don't think I'm trying to cast shade (or whatever the hell those people on Gawker say). And how do you find these places?

LOL, that's horrifying. Where in VA was this, pretty awesome.
You going to C&C tomorrow?

There used to be a couple abandoned houses around where I live (they've since been torn down). When we were in high school we'd go out and film our own horror movies there. It was stupid, but so much fun.

Sometimes I just head out into the countryside with my camera looking for cool spots to do photography. Other times I'm out there hiking or visiting wineries and I just find them by accident. In those cases, I make a mental note to return later with my camera.

Technically, yes. I do try to be respectful of the property. I take only pictures, and leave only footprints. I also never force my way into a place. I only venture in if a door's wide open.
I tend to find these places when I'm out hiking, or cruising around wine country. Occasionally, I'll go off of tips from photographer friends who know the area.

It was in Linden, VA. A small farming community about an hour outside of DC.
Yep, I'm planning on being at Katie's tomorrow! See you there?

The balls you must have to wander around vacant property while barefoot. Good on you.

Ah ok. Pretty interesting, sort of like peeking into someones life. Previous life I guess.
Yep, be there at 6am with bells on. Actually filming some www.rightfootdown.com stuff there tomorrow.

Hmm, well it will be scooped by a developer for pennies I am sure. i once spent a night in Rappahannock County. That is all I care to say about that experience. And I often used to drive from North Carolina to NYC and Philly in years past while chasing......things and stuff. I canhonestly say, I have ZERO desire to go to D.C. or to even visit Virginia in general (I know D.C. is not in VA but you get my point I am sure) after those horrible, stressful drives through on the interstate at 60 mph.

Chances are that place wasn't in the best of shape to begin with when people were still living there, so the decay probably had a bit of a head start. That said, it doesn't take much. Once the roof starts failing, you can kiss the ceilings good bye, and the freeze/thaw cycles make short work of the rest of the plaster.
