Is how long this car was in service with the Maricopa Sheriffs department. The bid is at $500.
That's a long time to keep a car in service, hope somebody restores this thing to it's former glory.
It's got a 5.8 V8 with a two barrel carb also.

Sheriff Joe may be an asshole, but there is no denying he knows how to squeeze every last useful bit out of a penny.

Only 144,000 miles, must have spent a good portion of those years as a backup unit for when other cars were down for repairs. It is kind of jarring to see the remains of a URL on the side of a police car from 1985 though.

Yup, probably saw occasional use from time to time. Still cool that somebody chose to keep it around for so long though.

Yeah, I thought it was crazy that my dad's township still had a box body '87 Caprice through 2004, but this takes that to a whole other level.

Give me that now!
There was an 80's Caprice recently retired from a Fire Department that I posted a while back also. I've got a thing for old cars still in service.
There's probably at least a few old Caprices floating around though. Where is what I'd like to know.

I would think small towns in dry, warm climates. I remember riding through Chloride, Arizona in the mid '90s and their fire station didn't seem to have any truck newer than the 1950s parked inside at the time. There has to be a small town somewhere out in the desert that still has an '80s LTD Crown Vic or Caprice in service.
The one I saw was pretty rough, after 17 years of road salt, the floors were rotted out, plus the head gaskets were shot (at the very least). It had been bought new as a midnight blue unmarked car (my dad drove it for a while, and it once got backed into in our driveway, necessitating a new door skin), then it got painted white and put into the patrol fleet, then it was placed on permanent loan to the zoning officer for years, before finally being retired. I remember they had it up for sealed bid auction along with a few bubble Caprices for a starting bid of $50. A high school friend was really interested, but they ended up not getting any bids and paid to have it taken to a salvage yard.

I'd think the same. There might even be a few floating around the auxiliary lots in some larger cities. Somewhere in Virginia had a bunch of old 9c1s on their civilian patrol thing fleet.
I'll create my own town. With blackjack, and hookers and 9c1 Caprices.

MCSO is a big department with a big budget. They have volunteer "posse" members that help with lake patrols and such. They're usually retirees. That's probably what this was being used for.

It appears to have been last labelled with Sheriff decals, which would lead me to think it wouldn't be driven by retirees? The ad says it was used as a patrol unit, but can't quote those always.

There is literally nothing special about that car in any way.

Except people restore those things and there aren't many left at all.

oh c'mon. The panther is like the Dane Cook of malaise era cars. If you want a COOL police car from the era, diplomat is the way to go. Biggest engine of the 3, most power, and in the lightest car.

The volunteer posse are deputized. They wear uniforms, carry guns...etc. I've witnessed first hand a seventy year old guy with an old revolver driving one of these at Saguaro Lake. I've never seen a real deputy driving anything close to this.

I personally wouldn't buy it, not my thing.
I'd restore a beached whale Caprice though if somebody asked me to and gave me the money.

Have you never heard of Sheriff Joe? I thought he was America's most famous Sheriff. Their jails have lost accreditation multiple times. Keep in mind this isn't some podunk county. It's the most populous county in Arizona, with over 4 million people.
