I think you bought the wrong size tires.
Guess normal SUV tires were too expensive?
I guess this isn't really dangerous, but it sure looks stupid.

Low profile 17s are cheaper than low profile 21s + New wheels.
Not putting dumb wheels on your SUV is of course free, but that's expecting too much from people today.

One of my greatest automotive pet peeves. If you can't afford/are too stupid to buy the right size tires, you have no business owning the vehicle.

It's not only tire size. I would even go so far as to say that if live somewhere with snow and ice in winter and you can't afford winter tires, you've done something wrong.

If you want to know a dirty little secret of mine, I have considered doing this to the 16's on the Defender just to see how the handling differs.

What if AWD?

AWD doesn't help you steer or brake! All it does is help you build up speed faster so you die faster.
I can understand that nobody in Britain uses winter tires with the kind of winters you have, but it's still hilarious from a Bavarian standpoint to see everybody freak out over an inch of snow.

Dangerously Stupid...

Like the woman who passed me in my Crown Vic a few years ago in a Durango in the snow. When we got a gentle curve, she tried to take it without slowing down and ended up facing the wrong way on the sidewalk.

Chances are... this makes it accelerate better (has the effect of lower gearing) and handle better (lower center of gravity).
It also has the benefit of discouraging speeding since the speedometer will indicate a speed that is faster than they're really going.
But I also bet those lower profile tires have a lower load rating. Hope they aren't planning on towing anything.
While this looks stupid, it's probably a lot safer than those bro trucks that are lifted sky high.

Now I feel awful :( True enough about British winters though. My dear mother owns a '12 Legacy Outback only because she needs it in winter because there's a gentle incline on the road to the house. We live in a valley, so we barely get any snow in the village. Obviously she doesn't own winter tyres, because AWD. And I don't argue, because mother.

How do you know he didn't already have the wheels and the tires and bought the-nevermind.

Never argue with mother Period
Mine wants AWD on her next car as well, but she lives in Switzerland so I have to concede that she might have something of a point there. She won't use it for anything a FWD or RWD car can't handle, but if it makes her feel better...
