My computer is caput. Both the cooling fan and CPU are not functioning. It doesn't make sense to have it fixed because at that point I'd almost be paying what I bought the computer for. Thankfully the tech dude at Staples was able to save all my documents and what not. I don't know what I'd do without my Gif collection lol. I'm probably going to have to finish the semester using only the library computers. And since posting via mobile is a punishment worse than death I won't be so active on here for the next month. The money for new car parts in the summer is now going towards a new computer:(

What? A new mobo + CPU can't cost more than your whole computer. Maybe a mild upgrade is what you need?

Paging Nibby. I'm sure you've got a decent little mobile workstation for sale and properly sorted at a decent price.

I bought the computer on sale for a good bit off the original price. The repairs don't cost more but its over half what I payed for the computer.

Not at the moment since I don't feel like shelling out the money for another one just yet.

If it's any consolation I finally managed to get your little parcel sent today. I was holding out for a guy to get back to me on a shirt (I've not given up on it though). Told it would take about five days.

Is anything salvagable? Memory/HDD-SSD?

I assume so, those two things were the only parts throwing errors. Since the tech guy was able to save my documents and everything I wouldn't want to lose than some components must still be functioning.

Maybe $150-200 for a CPU, $50 for a decent fan. The repair is worth it.

Tech guy said they were normally around $350. Not like I can't take it somewhere else though. Hence why I'm not rushing to get a replacement so I can figure out my options.

I'm assuming that's labor cost included, right? It's really easy to replace the fan and the CPU yourself.

I'd assume so. I wanted to look into if it was something I could handle myself. But normally this is the kind of thing I hand off to someone else to do, so that it gets done correctly haha

CPU and fan are eeeeeeeasy to replace (less than 5 minutes). You can either get a direct replacement searching for a dv6-specific unit, or upgrade to a nicer one that has the same slot (e.g. Intel Core i#, AMD A#, etc.), and find a universal fan that fits that same slot style. You may also just skip all that frustration and buy a motherboard, CPU, and fan (MicroCenter, TigerDirect, newegg, Fry's, eBay, amazon) and reuse the RAM, hard drive, and power supply.
I would be surprised if the CPU is actually shot, as they tend to be pretty robust, and shut themselves down if they are beginning to overheat.
