His DD/office was stolen !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . More details below.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
As we suspected following a recent trend in the Houston area, his truck was located inside of a convenience store in an attempted !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Thieves are stealing pickup trucks throughout Houston and crashing them through stores for one purpose, stealing ATM machines. My dad’s pride and joy was just another victim of this trend.
As you can see, the truck was reversed into the store. Before hand (or probably at this impound lot for all we know), his toolbox was forced open and all his tools were stolen. A set of ladders as well. Inside, some expensive materials for a current job site were also stolen.
The damage starts with the driver’s door lock and column lock. Finally, the bed of the truck is destroyed and it has been confirmed to have frame damaged.
My dad babied that engine up way passed 600,000+miles. It physically looks good and even if they were flooring it the whole time, that 7.3 Turbo Diesel V8 is unlikely to have been damaged.
Most likely it will be totaled. My dad dislikes these new trucks that have come out in the last 8 years or so. He is an old school kind of man. None of these flashy new trucks catch his interest and he has ZERO confidence on the powertrains. He has put at least 500,000 miles on every truck he has owned and highly doubts these new eco-friendly Glam Trucks will give him the same loyalty without some serious money invested, unlike anything he has owned. He said, “ I better start saving up for modules, sensors, and ecu’s if I get a new truck”
One funny story though. We were there with the insurance adjuster and she made it clear we couldn’t take anything from the truck or even get too close to it. My dad told her, “ I just want to look inside really quick” . There, my dad noticed that his new Ray Band sunglasses were still in this little storage compartment under the center console. As soon as she looked away, he reached in and took the glasses, putting them on top of his hat... and on top of his other sunglasses LOL. She turned around and asked if he took anything. My dad said, “ No ”, all the while with 2 pairs of sunglasses on his head LOL!

Its unfortunate that it was damaged so badly and since there is frame damage it looks like it won't be repaired. The 7.3L motors are workhorses and I am sure if it does get salvaged, the motor will live on in another body
![]() 04/07/2015 at 11:59 |
|
haha good on him about the sunglasses. I would usually say in this case it sucks he got it back within that 30 day period, but at least you have some resolution on it. Hope he gets a big fat check including for his tools and materials!
![]() 04/07/2015 at 11:59 |

Shit man, that sucks. I take it he'll be looking for used trucks rather than new ones?
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:00 |
|
I wonder if he can find a replacement of that gen for within the total amount that's anywhere near as good. Maybe he can buy back the engine from the insurance company as a spare...
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:00 |
|
ohhh dear. not cool. "
as far as new truck go: meh. The diesel are still made by secondary companys (with ford being the exception AFAIK) I dont see the motors failing. Sure the radio might go out, but who needs a radio.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:01 |

Somehow I missed your post about this. I feel badly for your dad.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:01 |

Sorry to hear about the loss of the truck. At least he got his shades back and has a funny story about how he saved them. I would assume that once they are done they will let him get back into the truck and get any items, but better to get the shades now rather than hope they aren't picked up by someone else while the truck is waiting to find out its fate.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:03 |

I understand where your dad is coming from, but honestly I've heard good things about the newest variants of all the big 3 diesel engines. On the non-powertrain side the new trucks should be as good or better, heck, the fords are still riding on the same basic body/frame of your dads 7.3. In terms of them being "glam trucks" just order an XL or XLT I can guarantee you there is nothing "glam" about a XL F250. Oh also, I'm sorry to hear about the truck, sounds like your dad really takes care of his stuff thats no way for that truck's life to end.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:06 |

That's terrible news and 600k is impressive mileage. I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to find a similar used one with low miles that was used as a "pretty boy" truck and just start racking up the miles on that?
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:06 |
|
that sucks about the truck
my dad is also super picky about his truck, a few years ago he was looking for a truck to replace his 94' sierra and the truck had to be 2WD, gasoline, relatively cheap, and a extended cab. Needless to say he's still driving his sierra around
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:10 |
|
At least it wasn't a burnt-out shell in a field (that happened to one of my friends). Sorry about the truck.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:11 |

Was your dad able to salvage anything from the current job he was on? I remember you saying he had some plans and whatnot in there that were rather important.
On another note, I hate people. You should be legally allowed to put a bear trap in your car as a security device
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:14 |
|
Yep. Also worth noting is just how good modern gas truck engines are. To the point where I'd honestly take a 2015 gas powered truck over a 2000 diesel powered one.
The ~$8k in savings for them is also huge.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:15 |
|
Glad he at least got the RayBans back, and hopefully a decent check from the insurance company so he can get a used truck to his liking :) The mileage is really impressive too!
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:18 |
|
Maybe he can find another truck just like it?
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:19 |

GRAAAAAAH THIS PISSES ME OFF TO NO END! FUCK THESE THIEVING ANIMALS.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:25 |
|
I'm glad y'all got some closure, even though the truck may be gone! If your Dad doesn't have brand allegiance, you can still get a bare bones Ram 2500 with a Cummins and a 6 speed manual, and that's a pretty damn good combo.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:29 |
|
I remember when that happened with our truck, we had a 1997 k2500 suburban stolen and to help it blend in they ditched the front brush guard but in so doing they cut the wire to the 9th fuel injector for the supercharger. Messed the engine all sorts of up running lean. We got it back when they ditched it but it was several thousand in repairs still.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:34 |
|
That's a really good point if you are towing less than say 15k on a regular basis then a 6.2 from ford is going to be dead nuts reliable, cheap and easy to maintain and will save you money because a) 8k up front and b) gas is cheaper in a lot of places. I'm sure the other big 3 gassers are the same.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:35 |

man, people can be so awful sometimes... Glad they found it and your dad got his sunglasses back, sometimes it's the little victories that count Hahahaha
Best of luck to him in finding a replacement!
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:38 |
|
I hate people, honestly.
But seriously, I never would have guessed it had that many miles on it. Never. Hope he finds something he likes.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:46 |

convince him to buy an Escalade EXT and do a Duramax/Allison swap
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:49 |
|
your right and I do try to steer him into a new one. He can't doubt the power they have and the gadgets found even on a XLT are useful.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:49 |
|
Ugh, I'm so sorry. :(
I hope they find the perps and let your dad punch them in the balls for good measure. Never mess with another person's truck and never, EVER mess with another person's livelihood.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:50 |
|
Seriously—that truck looked like it was in great condition. :(
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:50 |
|
a list has been made. Home owner's insurance covers the property and the auto insurance covers the truck. Good thing they are through the same people :]
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:51 |
|
true true. Some important paperwork was still inside. Just a crazy situation when your workhorse/office gets taken
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:52 |
|
I feel its pretty clear where the damage from the douchebags is. So I agree, looked like it was in great condition.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:52 |
|
Yes, most of the paperwork was left in the truck but he can't take anything from it at the moment.
A +1 for the bear trap idea!
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:54 |
|
I'm sure they exist. Once the insurance makes a decision on it, we can move forward. As much as I like it, I think it's time for my dad to upgrade to something new also
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:55 |
|
very true. For all we know, they could of let the truck running all night at the store and it over heated. A thorough check needs to be done for sure
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:55 |
|
Yup, sounds like my dad. It has to be a certain way :]
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:56 |
|
lol true true. They are very capable, more so than the old beasts of the late 90's, early 00's
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:57 |
|
he has always liked to have a mid 00's Cummins 4x4. It's possible :]
![]() 04/07/2015 at 12:58 |
|
That sucks. I'm heard that the 6.0s and 6.4s are nowhere near as solid as the 7.3s were, and are a pain in the ass to work on, but don't have any personal experience with the later engines. Haven't heard anything about the 6.7s on the service side. You can still find nicely kept 7.3s used, I was looking awhile back. Hope the insurance company makes him whole and he finds another truck to love.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:01 |
|
very true. My dad's friends are already bidding on the engine and trans combo lol :]
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:06 |
|
exactly Stef. It's hard to do commercial A/C work in a 2015 Ford Escape rental lol :] Good thing most of his blue prints, invoices, and other various important paper work was still inside the cab. When we go into office for the state of Texas, 3 swift kicks with steel toe boots to the huevos would be the minimum punishment for grand theft of a workingman's truck
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:06 |
|
Thanks buddy. Once the insurance stuff is done, the search for the next great workhorse will be on!
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:08 |
|
Good question actually. Prices are high though since people from Mexico find these very desirable and can be legalized over there. A 7.3L Power Stroke and Mexican sulfur diesel is a very good thing
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:08 |
|
Thanks buddy, The search for the next great workhorse will commence hopefully soon :]
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:09 |

That is truck. Most see a different fate :'(
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:09 |
|
it's possible but I am steering him toward an upgrade :]
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:10 |
|
It's k $kay. He's a classic tough guy and hopefully a little more modern if he decides to upgrade :]
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:11 |
|
Nah, every chuntaro around here has a Escalade. Dura/Alli swaps are always a good thing tho :]
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:12 |
|
My best wishes to your dad.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:12 |
|
it's very possible, but an upgrade would be cool as well
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:18 |
|
Thanx buddy :]
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:22 |
|
I'm sure there are some available and I know we will look. But I will still try and convince him to just get something brand new. I'm not a big fan of them either but they are pretty powerful nowadays. The search for the next great workhorse will commence soon :]
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:24 |

04.5-05 are the best years for those, pre-emissions and they still had the NV5600 instead of the G56.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:29 |
|
On the bright side he got more of it back than I expected.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:29 |
|
Oh yes :]
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:31 |
|
lol very true :]
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:32 |

His previous 2 trucks he also put over 500,000 on each. Hard miles on all of them. Usually with a 16 ft trailer full of gear and materials.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:35 |
|
I know man, I feel the same way but it happens :'(
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:36 |
|
Totally agree with your dad though. My issue with new trucks is how high of the ground they are from the factory. I guess they think everyone wants their truck pre-bro'd.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:39 |
|
especially trying to get heavy gear in and out from the sides and rear without dropping the tailgate. My dad is 5' 7" so he knows this issue. These sat perfect
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:41 |
|
Man that is a rough story. But that's why we have insurance.
As you are probably aware and others have stated....the 7.3L is definitely known for being an absolute bullet proof motor. Simple routine oil change and maintenance and they'll last forever. They aren't the only trucks that are good though.
Obviously stay away from anything with a 6.0L Powerjoke. They are garbage. But any of the trucks pre 08 should be right in that same category as this truck. Some of them with even slightly more power and refinement without being super over the top. I'm a chevy guy myself. Have an 07 classic LBZ powered truck.
01-04 LB7 Duramax's had some injector issues. Most have been fixed under warranty but still something to look for.
04.5-06 LLY Duramax's had VVT turbos but not as refined as the later LBZ trucks. Also had some overheating issues.
06-07 LBZ Duramax's are bullet proof as well. Keep them stock and you can be cruising for a long while. Not to mention the 6 speed Allison is a beautiful piece of work and bulletproof as well as long as you keep power levels stock or near stock.
Good luck with wrapping everything up. Hope it goes well.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:44 |
|
oh yes those 06-07's were beast. A contender if he goes the route of not buying new. Thankx for the info buddy :]
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:45 |
|
Exactly! I'm 6'2" and I'd have to lift everything almost up to my head if I have the audacity to use a 4x4 3/4 or one ton truck bed for its purpose. Yet another reason I got rwd.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 13:58 |

DAYUM!!!
![]() 04/07/2015 at 14:18 |
|
Ugh. Bastards.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 14:24 |
|
They're good engines, but they won't see 500k-600k miles his dad was used to seeing. The block / rotating assembly will. But the all the corresponding systems on them will fail. Ford has an issue with the D.E.F. system pump/heater/injector. Plastic everywhere that eventually cracks or warps allowing dirt & water where they don't belong causing other part failures. The 7.3 you just had to replace the FICM, Injectors, and HPOP seals every now and then.
The new engines aren't bad, just more parts that could fail.
But holy hell the new duramax, cummins, powerstrokes are torque monsters.
![]() 04/07/2015 at 14:30 |
|
a lot!
![]() 04/07/2015 at 17:29 |
|
Was this truck a manual or automatic? I'm gonna guess it's an automatic.
He may want to consider replacing it with a manual which has been proven to be a good theft deterrent. But that also means he would be limited to the heavy duty Ram with the Cummins engine.
![]() 04/08/2015 at 05:06 |

great to hear its been found. \0/
sucks to hear about the damage though. :(
looks like your dad is buying a new truck!
![]() 04/08/2015 at 09:05 |

as picky as he is, I believe it will be fun to find the next beast
![]() 04/08/2015 at 09:08 |

hopefully insurance pay up quickly , and your father has enough put aside to cover the rest.
![]() 04/08/2015 at 09:08 |

oops forgot. enjoy the time searching with him for a new truck!
![]() 04/08/2015 at 09:11 |

it'll be a little while, tax season is a bit crazy since my parents were audited. But soon :]

curious to see what he gets next too.
