Post-Purchase Cognitive Dissonance. Is has arrived. Yeah it’s a bad-to-the-bone Challenger R/T, but it was twenty eight grand.

Kinja'd!!!

Options:

-Keep the Challenger through college. This sounds expensive.

-Sell the Challenger soon, carless for the next 2 years, buy ‘94 Camry (just an example) right before college. Now that’s a bit cruel, but the most beneficial in the long run.

-Sell the Challenger soon, buy ‘94 Camry soon after, use through college. See above.

-Keep the Challenger until the enjoyment goes away, buy and use ‘94 Camry through college. If the enjoyment goes away before college, I will drive a Camry. If the enjoyment does not go away before college, I will keep the Challenger. This idea sounds the best to me, and I predict that the enjoyment will wear off at the end of the year.

Ehhh I might lose the PPCD when I fire up that Hemi again in the morning, but what does Oppo think?

If you already bought the car, you might as well enjoy it for a while! Keep it spotless, scratchless, then sell it before college unless you are really hurting on the payments. You probably don't need a fancy car during college, there are so many other things to do.

You're not in college yet and you got a 28k$ Dodge Challenger?? WTF??

I come from a rich family, but there's no way in hell my parents would have been stupid enough to buy a 350+hp car to the 16 year old me, eventhough it was pocket change for them. That's borderline irresponsible lol

Good idea. After 2.5 years then of owning it, I'm almost certain that the enjoyment will wear off.

You're 15, right? Sit back and enjoy your Challenger. Pick up a job to maintain it if you have to. But, right now, you seem to be in a pretty good situation. Take good care of it, then sell it in college if payments are strangling you (which is quite possible).

Not to mention, don't you think your parents would be more than a little pissed if you just turned around and sold the car that you have been looking so long for?

Why not sell it and buy something else with the 25k? Something more useable and cheaper (gas at least) to maintain.

I've had buyers remorse a couple of times in the 3.5 years of my 4Runner ownership, but even through being helplessly slow and a terror on gas, I am super glad I kept it. I regret not swapping for a bigger engine when the headgaskets blew, especially since it would've saved money in the long run.

Are you serious?

It hasn't even been a week, has it? Just enjoy the car. Even if you don't like it weren't you basically given it? That alone should be enough for you to not complain about not liking it. Even if it's not perfect it's not like it cost you anything.

It cost my parents a lot though, who will also have to pay for college, while I contribute slightly with a part-time job.

I love the car to pieces, but after a while, it probably won't be worth the continuous sub-25 insurance payments.

It's not like you made them buy you the car.

As an independent adult if I was in your situation I would have asked to get something more reasonable and have the rest put away for after college, but that's becauee I have experience. If I was 15 and my parents gave me a $28k budget for a car I would have been stoked.

I wouldn't have picked an automatic Challenger but to each their own...

You're 16 and your parents just bought you a 28k$ 375hp car that you will bang and crash very soon. I highly doubt they will have problems to pay your tuitions, the insurance and the gas for it.

If they can't or if they even THINK of these costscosts for that matter, they really need to get their heads examined and learn what the word "priorities" mean.

ha fucking classic. It's one thing if there's a bunch of teenagers driving cars that cost more than a lot of the adults' DDs—people come from different situations—but the fact that almost none of them are happy with it says something. People learn though.

NO! Keep it.

Sure I probably would have gone in a different direction with a $28k budget but to each their own. Honestly I probably would have gone mad on CL and had at least 4-5 cars at my disposal. But that's just me and a dream I have.

Like many on this post I feel you should have started off a wee bit simpler but now that you're into the situation stick it out. The best thing you can do to alleviate your parents of major college bills is study hard in school now and when senior year rolls around apply for as many scholarships or grants as you can.

The fact that your parents gave you such a budget in the first place I'm almost certain they knew what they were doing and have planned out finances accordingly. If you can get a part time gig somewhere to offset whatever costs you can. At least gas money and maybe either some of the insurance or car note.

I didnt have a car at your age (Im not that much older than you). Now I have a Magnum RT, and its my DD. You're going to need a good job to keep it as a DD, but as has been said, there are more important things. I had a Neon for 5 years before it got totaled, and outside of repairs and gas, I didnt put any money into it. Thats part of why I have the Magnum as a DD, and also part of why I have an SL.

That said, is your Challenger an auto or manual? The auto + 5.7 should return good gas mileage if you stay out of it, with MDS being your saving grace. I average 20mpg, with a bigger, heavier car, and I have a brand new HEMI in it.

Ultimately, it just comes down to what your willing to do. Some people just want something else, some people will fight for keeping what they have, and other people just settle. Which group will you stick to?

With your parents covering it, college, etc, why not keep it?

However, being brutally, painfully, realistic here, my girlfriend got a similar deal (parents bought her a brand new car when she got her license and paid all her expenses through college, though they did require her to get a part-time job) and I think she made an incredibly wise decision for a 16-year-old: A 5-door hatchback.

You move a lot in college and probably won't want to pay for the parking permit, so get something that you can pack full of all your belongings and that doesn't attract attention sitting in the dorm/apartment parking lot. A souped up coupe is not what you really want for this. If you were poorer, I'd recommend a beat-up lower-mileage minivan, since it can carry a lot of crap, attracts zero attention (college campuses and areas around them tend to have relatively high crime rates, so looking less interesting is a good plan), and gets you to those few places you need to drive to.

I had no debt and solid credit out of college, but instead of saving money for a downpayment I financed a car 2 months in. Then traded it two years later, again without a big enough down payment.

I was not a smart man, though I'm enjoying my current car and I can't complain much, my only debt is my car.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming now that you gotta pay gas and insurance, you gotta get a job, but oh no, we can't have that, can we? So I'm guessing you expect to sell the car, buy something for under $2k, and pocket the difference, don't ya? Allow me to explain why that plan is retarded- if you have any respect for your parents, well, you'd keep it, but if keeping it isn't an option, you'd pay them back, THE FULL $28k, not to mention if THEY have any sense at all (my money is on that they don't really, but I'm not gonna judge) they'd make you give back the money you get selling it, then pay em the remaining whatever is left toward the $28k, and leave you on your own for whatever beater you wanna get.

Either way, you won't be getting the big payday you expect from selling it.

I can't seem to reply to your actual post (#kinja'd) so i'll reply to your reply.

I got my GLI, for free from my parents. This car was $23,034 USD. This makes it four times more expensive than my brother's elantra, and double the price of my sister's sonic.

And you know what? For a while I really didn't like it. It pissed me off. it wasn't fast enough, or cool enough, and it was wrong wheel drive.

But then something amazing happened. I stopped giving a shit about what others thought, and I started having fun. I drove the GLi as it was meant to be driven, and I put work in to it (new tires, and a tune!)

Now? I love the car! Sure, it's no 4.6GT mustang, it's no Camaro, and it's no E46 M3, but it's just as fun as any of those cars would be day to day, and it's a better daily.

I paid $23K for a USED JETTA. and I do not regret it one bit!

Enjoy the car man, because you have one bad-ass, fast, cool ride, with a pretty big aftermarket! :D

WAIT a second... your parents bought it for you??? Well then there is ONLY things you should be doing are:

-Express to them how much you love the car and how grateful you are. Your parents bought you the car because they love you and want to make you happy. Letting them know the car makes you happy and that you appreciate it will make them happy and they will feel it's money well spent.

-Take care of the car, don't abuse it, don't drive it like an idiotic fashion where you risk your life. The WORST thing you could do is crash and get yourself killed.
