my verdict is... I guess it's pretty good if that's what you're into, but I'll stick with what I like.

All joking aside, the Beetle is better than I expected. I didn't know it was a turbo, as I still had it in my head that it had a 5-pot. Pretty fun, though. It does have more body roll than you'd expect for a car that looks so hunkered down, but not enough to be a problem. I didn't get along with the automatic at low speeds either, but once you're going faster it does better.

Honestly if I go more than a few months without exposure to VAG, I start to go crazy.

Is the auto a DSG, or a regular slushbox?

Looks like it's a regular 6-speed auto, with Tiptronic. I didn't bother much with the shift-it-yourself part, just left it alone. Seems like 1st and second gears are confused on how to interact with each other. Once you hit 3rd it's fine.

The gearing seems (in my experience) to be a pretty typical German thing— first three gears are all "lol i don't know what i'm doing," but then you hit 40 or so MPH and everything's right with the world.

I've driven the beetle and the Jetta, I liked the beetle more because it didn't look like a corolla. That gear box was hunting like mad around 20-30 mph though, rather annoying. Otherwise a tolerable car.
