Make sure their car has this in it. Oh, you don't want a manual? Tough tartar sauce. My house, my rules. It's this or the bus for you.

Manuel does a pretty good job of keeping people from texting.

Except no, manual doesn't stop any of that, it's just a damn transmission, not a magical being that makes you not able to drive distracted. I've texted, made oppo posts, sent tweets, looked up YouTube videos, packed and smoked bowls, and even gotten road dome, all while driving a manual.

beat me to it!

Kinda related, when my marine sciences sister gets on my ass about my Jeep single-handedly killing the environment, I remind her that I'm doing the single best thing for the environment and NOT MAKING ANY MORE SHITTY HUMANS. But apparently "it doesn't work like that," psh.

this is better. Old manual. I grew up driving old cars. They're not as safe but they're so much more involved. You have to care more about driving because you'll crash otherwise.

You shouldn't be doing that. That's not safe. Where did you pick up the term "road dome"? I haven't heard that since high school. I haven't met anyone since that has even heard of head being referred to as dome.

When some talks about doing sexual stuff while driving I always think of the worst possible outcome if there was an accident. Too many deer around here pop out to risk it at night. Too many people during the daylight. Imagine the airbag going off as she goes to work.

This won't work.

Have you people actually driven manual? It doesn't take your attention all the time. In fact Id argue that most of the time you're in a gear and don't touch the stick. There's ample opportunities to text/eat/apply makeup.

Juat educate your teen, and if they refuse to listen don't let them drive. Manuals won't fix distracted driving

What car does she drive? If it's an import, you should show her this

And this:

Tends to quiet down Prius drivers who don't actually understand how Eco UNfriendly their hybrid is.

lol I used to text while driving stick shift all the time. Hold the phone in your right hand and you can still shift.

Import? In MY family? Hell nah. She had an older Mustang GT hand-me-down from our dad before she entered officer training and hasn't been driving anything since January. Her beef with the Jeep is that it has no cat and is burning oil and gas like no tomorrow, which is kinda reasonable.

Seems like somebody could make a device app that detects the location of the phone. Moving over 15mph?? No texting.

Manual knowledge, though, is important in the long term.. Eventually there will be nice old cars for sale that nobody buys because their potential customers don't know how to drive it.

Prices might even be reasonable. This gap will grow larger over time until , sadly, the third pedal is a confusing thing to most.

At least nobody wants to borrow the car, they can't drive it.

But what if you are a passenger? Or on a train or bus? Or just running really fast? Or in a legitimate emergency (stuck throttle, road rage pursuit)? Does the phone become a non-functional brick in all those scenarios?

This is exactly what we did in our house. There are no automatic transitions allowed. Not sure if the MT helps with texting all that much, but it does make a nice anti-theft device.

If I tried that with my phone (6 inch screen; can't text with one hand anyway) I would never be able to do anything.

Solution : Buy your kid a manual car and a phone as big as your face.

As a 17 year old with a car, I feel like I have some insight on the topic which is worth sharing.

1) You can still use your phone and drive manual - It is less tempting to do so, but still possible.

2) Driving manual does encourage some people to pay more attention to the road - For me it does. On the other hand, my dad will have his phone in his right hand, his left hand holding a sandwich, and will ask me to put the shifter in third for him, meanwhile he is steering with his right knee.

3) The best (and only way) to prevent a kid from texting and driving is for them to understand 3 things:

A) Texting and driving is very likely to result in you causing an accident

B) Being in an accident sucks - being the one who caused it sucks even more.

C) If you didn't pay for the car you are driving, nor are you paying for the insurance/gas/maintenance/repairs, you have no right to partake in risky driving behaviour.

The main reason I don't text and drive, fly around corners at 70km/h, or cruise on the highway at 170 is because I have respect for how much money my dad puts out so that I can drive a (somewhat) awesome car (2003 IS300 5MT).

NOT CONDONING IT BUT

It's pretty easy to text and drive while driving a stick, especially in suburban america. Or on island roads in the Caribbean as i first learned how to do it :/

But it's definitely harder than an autobox.
