Can a sports car be FWD? What does the term "sportscar" me to you. For me personally it means something RWD, and designed with the focus on providing a fun driving experience, doesn't have to be the fastest thing, doesn't have to have a set number of doors, or a fixed roof, just the intention making the driver smile. but to me if it is FWD or AWD, then the term "sportscar" is non applicable.

Also the other day a friend of mine, who happens to be a girl, told me a shouldn't want a Z4 because they are to girly, and I was like "Whaaaaaaaaaaat?"

The Z4 looks about as manly as convertibles get. Especially the after re-design.

Kinja'd!!!

Second only to maybe a Viper droptop.

Given that my definition is any car designed to be driven above normal speeds, yeah.

FWD, yes completely.

However, if you include AWD here you start going down a path where sports cars and performance cars are labeled differently.

Doesn't that make a Mitsubishi Mirage a sports car too, though? Pretty sure it can get above highway speeds. Maybe. Downhill. With a tailwind.

well that's like any car. Since most modern cars are capable of driving at least 100mph or more, and maintaining that speed for awhile.

Nope. As it will probably end up on its mirrors if it went around a corner at below average speeds. Plus driving it above 80 will probably knacker it any how.

Fun driving experience through faster than normal acceleration, better than normal handling. Also a plus... strong fanbase and good aftermarket support. I don't think it excludes fwd, definitely not awd.

I love Del Sols, to bad they are the heaviest 5th gen Civic, they actually weigh about 100lbs more than the sedan. darn tagra tops add a lot of weight, but they are awesome.

any way I want one in Samba Green. also this is pretty cool

Not quite. A Civic isn't designed to be able to take the first corner at Silverstone at 63 mph where as a Civic Type R is. All about intent for my definition. Did the engineers design the car to be able to operate without any problems at higher speeds.

I should also add that for me Sports car isn't a genre of car more of a type.

For example the MX5 is a sports car but specifically a roadster however the Civic Type R is also a sports car but it is specifically a Hot Hatch.

and for added context the BMW M5 is a supercar and more specifically a super saloon where as the Huracan is also a supercar but more specifically a super coupe.

A sampling of "sportscars" that were slower around the Ring than a FWD Cobalt:

Lotus Exige S

Porsche Cayman S

Nissan 350Z

Honda NSX

Why does drivetrain always have to matter in these discussions?

I guess in my mind RWD cars are just more special, on a higher plateau than your average run of the mill FWD car. And to me "sportscar" is also a title that should be reserved for special cars and in my mind a FWD car just can't be that "special".

I think your definition most describes "Sport-y, fun, reasonably fast, tossable cars", and by your defintion, I think GTI's, FoST's, RSX-S, MS3, etc. are FWD cars that meet those specifications. I tend to think "sports cars" in more of a corvette/z4/boxster/cayman way. By that definition, it is something that is really fast, semi-impractical, and something you probably cant DD. Like you own a sports car because it's a luxury that you can afford to have on the side, to drive when it's nice or on a track, like an extracurricular in a sense.. just like a sport would be.

There is no doubt that FWD can be fast around a track, but it will never bring the same level of driving pleasure as RWD.

FWD was created for better packaging, not performance.

Kinja'd!!!

Is this Focus RS fast? Yes, but is it a driver's car? I don't think so.

Ring time has no impact on vehicle classification.

Vehicle configuration is directly applicable to classification.

2 doors (hatch is allowable), RWD, athletic in nature. There is a grey area between sports cars and GTs. No grey area with FWD compacts.

Kinja'd!!! PS9 > HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

"Sports car" Doesn't mean anything to me. It's marketing fluff, and fodder for flamewars on internet forums.

"Sports cars can't be FWD." "Sports cars can't come with more than two doors." "Sports cars have to be powerful." "A sports car requires a manual." "That's too heavy to be a sports car." "That's not a sports car, that's a 'sporty car'" "Sports cars should make you feel special." Man, I've seen and heard every bloody variant of what a sports car is/is not, can/cannot be, should/should not be, and all these attempts to juxtapose the term against ones own set of biases only serve to render it meaningless. And the maddening thing is every bloody car subculture does it!!! I'm just going to list my thoughts on the eternal 'sports car' circlejerk below here.

A sports car can't have FWD or come with more than two doors ehh? Well Nissan says it can, and they make cars for a living. Don't the people who make these things have a bigger say in what they are exactly then we do? The answer to this question is yes, because they literally buy that right, in the form of billions of dollars in yearly global marketing. Disagree? Too bad; they have a bigger bullhorn than you do, and people they reach with it won't argue your counterpoint because they won't even know you exist.

"A sports car has to be built with performance in mind first." LOL. If you're making a car that won't exist exclusively on a track for public consumption, here are the things that will ACTUALLY matter first; 1) Cost, 2) Safety 3) Fuel consumption 4) creature comforts. Once those first four are sorted, then we make it fast. If a couple of them cannot be resolved - especially the first 3 - then the car doesn't get built. Simple as that. Supercars can just skip around 3 for now, but the P1, 918 and F70 are here to tell us that the time for that is on it's way out.

A sports car is not special, because almost no car can be. They are designed in autocad, built by a combo of human and machine labor to a cost routed of as many corners as the accountants and other penny pinchers can slice. 'Soul, emotion, passion, excitement' are terms that have no business being applied to a clear product of mass production, a process that has been homogenized across almost all heavy manufacturing firms who as a result churn out almost the same bloody product. Does this mean you cannot feel special when driving your car? No, not at all. Does this mean we should not care about cars? No again, not at all. But this reality - as true for a Camry as it is for a C7 - Definitely renders the term 'special' meaningless when applied to something that has been manufactured tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of times.
