Kinja'd!!!

We've had more than a few newcomers recently, and it seemed like today would be a good day to remind everyone of the rules around here. If you've got any questions, as always, let us know.

One additional piece that is probably worth mentioning today. Being a dick to someone who is already being a dick doesn't make you any less of a dick. We've all been guilty of that one, but it's worth remembering from time to time.

Thanks!

(I like wbizarre's !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , it's pretty damn nice)

Edit with link to the Handbook since it seems like reshares are behaving strangely today (especially on mobile). Kinja's gonna Kinja!

Though this should go without saying, explicit or heavily implied sexism and racism will not be tolerated

Cough, cough.

It was addressed, I am fairly certain he got the point. If he continues, I'm sure that one of us will be alerted to it, or notice it ourselves. Everyone should get a chance to redeem themselves. It wasn't especially heinous, but it was pretty out of left field. Let's see where it goes.

(The reaction he got was fairly impressive, not just in consistency, but in volume. For the community, we've seen a lot worse, which is why I think we let this one take its course, rather than stepping in).

Yes, hello. I am a Nigerian prince.

If I am not viewing this handbook on a mobile device or in a paper format, is it really a handbook?

An ///M logo? When did the mods become BMW shills?

Yeah, I was really surprised to see the way everyone responded. Keith Collantine on Formula 1 Fanatic wrote a piece about the WEC banning of grid girls and suggested that maybe it's time for F1 to do the same. I was really surprised and kind of disheartened at how negative the response was. Nice to see Oppo reacting differently.

It really is, but it seems like the behavior for reframed reshares is a tad wonky, since people can respond directly to the reshare (which, btw, is awfully neat).

Are you saying you don't have a hand in that discussion? More importantly, are you saying you like Comic Sans

Replying to the top comment out of necessity (apologies):

I can't seem to make original comments on Oppolock posts! I was granted authorship a while back, but something seems to have changed. I'd like to think I only decrease the average IQ of Oppo by a few tenths of a point overall, so I'd really appreciate if any Kinja black sorcerers could look into this issue. Its only Oppo posts; other sections of Jalopnik/Gawker-media-empire are fine.

(apologies for thread-jacking, again)

Try wiping your cache and cookies (alternate testing method, log in to oppo using a private session and see if the problem goes away - if it does, then definitely clear your cache and cookies and see if that helps).

You're not the only one experiencing this, I haven't yet... but several others are. Also, you could on this post, I wonder what the difference is?

I can reply to other's comments, but not to the post generally. Its bizarre.

Weird. I just tried the following. I followed you for Oppo, I removed your author status, then re-added you. (probably wasting my time, but it's worth a try). What happens if you use a different browser?

...I can totally test that right now because I am definitely not at work using IE. I just prefer to wait a few hours until I get ho....I mean, just because. Thanks for helping!

I would like to propose an informed consent rule. I’m worried by the amount of people posting pictures of friends/significant others without even asking them or telling them about the extreme lack of privacy within kinja. Minors are a whole separate ballgame, too.

That’s an interesting thought. And I’ve been largely away from Kinja the last few days, but have seen the emails (after the fact) recently. Part of the informed consent issue is that a lot of pictures here are from random corners of the internet. And of course, then there are the rights of parents / spouses. It becomes quite difficult to enforce, potentially. And confirming consent would be a nightmare. I don’t disagree with the approach, I just don’t want to add a requirement which we can’t realistically enforce. Thoughts?

Yea, unfortunately there’s really no way to enforce it, but I think the main goal would be people thinking before they post and maybe adding a line to mention that minors pictured have parental consent and/or anyone over 18 understands the nature of the board they agree to have their photo shared on. In my conversation with some folks the other day, it seems that some of Oppo does not realize the extreme lack of privacy on kinja, especially considering community members have gotten nasty/doxxed one another in the past.

I think that a reminder along those lines would probably cover the concerns. Because nothing on Kinja is a private post (well, except the one community which I lost when they cleared out the stagnant names, the couple of dozen posts within that community were all drafts or set to far future dates so no one who was not an author there could see them or the replies within).

As a parent to a 16 year old boy and a 4 year old girl I have a deep appreciation to being aware of when (and where) pictures of my children appear online. Many pictures of both exist, some publicly, but I like knowing exactly what the context is.
